To rise above the affliction of the body

(HH Kadamba Kanana Swami, 12th March 2012, New York) Lecture: SB 3.31.45-46

We are constantly controlled by the body. It's quite amazing how much the great exalted devotees rise above the body! The six Goswamis were hardly sleeping or eating, and sometimes they were forgetting to sleep and eat! It doesn't happen to us. We don't ever forget to sleep or eat! No way, it's not possible. Therefore, we cannot only philosophically cut this material conception through philosophy by reminding ourselves again and again:

'We are not this body. We are eternal spirit soul.'

That takes us to some level, which is important because as soon as one is remembering philosophically that: 'We are not the body', then, okay we can also begin to see all the pushing of the body as being relative, very relative, and not very important. Then we can judge each time when the senses pushes us and from that we can see if this is truly beneficial or not, and if not then we can cut it.

So the philosophical insight that: 'We are not the body,' is useful but it will not be enough to rise above the affliction of the body! That is only possible when one becomes deeply absorbed in remembering Krishna. Deeply absorbed in the relationship with Krishna. When one begins to practically live in that relationship with Krishna, then we see that it is the nature of the uttama-adhikārī.

This begins even in the madhyama-adhikārī. The kaniṣṭha-adhikārī is very much on the bodily concept of life, basically and very concerned that everything is there and in anxiety when it is not the case. The madhyama-adhikārī is ready to sacrifice bodily comfort and has faith that the higher spiritual reality is really what it's all about. But the uttama is beyond tamas, it's beyond ignorance, which means he lives in this relationship with Krishna. He perceives Krishna…

When one has taste then one begins to live in a relationship with Krishna. When one is predominated by taste for serving and glorifying Krishna, then one's Krishna Consciousness is no longer based on constantly pushing the mind towards Krishna, because one is naturally drawn towards Krishna, and this is an important stage. The stage when one becomes drawn to Krishna, rather than pushing and pushing our self towards Krishna.

If we always have to push our mind and consciousness towards Krishna then we become very tired and spiritual practices is draining:

'I feel like this is so much endeavour and I am exhausted!'

But when we become drawn towards Krishna then it's very enlivening!
