Greed Is Very Strong

When greed comes into business, then principles go out of the window, and then sooner or later it becomes worse and worse. One gets implicated in sinful activity, and the whole world is operating like that.

In India, if you buy fruits-that apple that you didn’t check is a rotten apple. That’s just how it is. If you buy each one, you just check it to make sure it is all right. In the West, they just pack four apples with cellophane on top, and two of them are rotten and there is nothing you can do about it! So the cheating is a pre-packed cheating - all pre-arranged. There’s no need anymore for any shopkeeper to do it on the go. In the supermarket it’s already built in the system.

So the cheating propensity is all over the world, because greed is very strong. Naturally greed is a predominating principle, because to enjoy at the expense of others- that is greed!

Developing Similar Divine Qualities

If one becomes a servant of a particular person. Then naturally whatever is important for that person- for our master, will also become important for us. So whatever values are important for Krsna, will become important for Krsna’s devotees, and thus the devotee automatically develops similar divine qualities as Krsna is developing.

Lotus feet of the Lord give shelter to Everyone

The lotus feet of the lord are our shelter. It is described that there are many marks on the lotus feet of the lord and these marks have various meanings. These meanings are very encouraging. It’s said that the thunderbolt of the lotus feet of Krishna is there for the people who think that I cannot surrender to Krishna because my karma is insurmountable but Krishna with his thunderbolt smashes the mountain of these karma and therefore they should not think that due to my karma, I cannot obtain the desired results. Krishna can purify the most impure and there is no obstacle in that regards that can block spiritual progress and the results will be attained if one can take shelter.
Then there is a stick with the hook and point that is used for controlling elephants. It is there to control the elephant of the mind. When the mind is so powerful and obstinate, then it is like an elephant, how can we control it? By talking shelter of Krishna’s lotus feet, we can easily control it.
Alright, but u know I m just struggling to survive, I m just having a hard time materially because life is not easy now a days, it’s a great struggle just to work and make enough money to pay bills, then it doesn’t leave me any more time. Don’t worry, Krishna will supply everything, on his lotus feet, there is a barley corn and also a fish and both of these symbols are indicating that there will be no material shortage for those who take shelter of Krishna.

Become A Well Wisher Of All Living Beings

Different cultures all have their saints. In the Catholic church they have saints and they burn the candles for them. In India – the suntas. Saints are all over the place. In Islam they have saints. Everywhere they have saints. So the quality of saints is interesting, because saints are not like ordinary people...

Offer Our Entire Life

Naturally so many sacrifices are being performed for fulfilling our personal interest. Such sacrifices which we tend to engage in for our own personal interest, are actually not really of benefit. It’s the sacrifice to the Supreme Lord that brings actual benefit to the Lord and ourselves.

The Lord is not dependent on our arrangement, because he’s atmaram. Atmaram means another yuga. He is known to be fully satisfied within oneself. He is independent. He has therefore no need for any offerings on our side. But the offerings are benefiting us. We are making offerings to the Supreme Lord- we are benefiting, and if we understand actually the whole purpose of life, is to make offerings and to offer our entire life, that actually is the aim.

Remnants Of Vedic culture

In Germany, the area where I’m preaching in, there was an archaeological statue or a finding. The statue was the body of a man and a head of a lion. What do you think of that? What would you make out of that?!

It’s like that all over the world, we find remnants of Vedic culture. So long ago Vedic culture spread all over the world, and now India is getting smaller and smaller. In 1947 we had a petition and Pakistan was separated.

But, if we travelled around Asia- we see AngkorWat the biggest Vishnu temple in Asia. The biggest Vishnu temple in the world is in Cambodia – what do you think of that?!

Then you go to Thailand and it’s all 'Rama Rama' where ever you go. 'Rama this', 'Rama that!'

The Russian Veda

There is a book, The Russian Veda. There is a devotee who has a copy of it, and in that book, it describes how there is a hero named Kishan. Kishan in India…Kishanbhai - Kishan Lalu. We know Kishan. This Kishan is a youth.

First of all there is a witch who is trying to kill him – but he fixes her up, and next he kills a huge snake. Kishan - huge snake - Russian Veda. Wait a minute we’ve got a copyright infringement! - what’s going on?!
Well they say that this book is as old as Russia!

Bhagavatam in Action

Even Srila Prabhupada Lilamrta can be counted as Bhagavatam. At least by Prabhupada’s own words because there is that lecture where someone asked Prabhupada, “Is Joan of Arc also in the Bhagavatam?” Also known as Jean de Arc. Joan of Arc in Bhagavatam? And Prabhupada says, “Eh? Joan of Arc in Bhagavatam?” And then he says, “Yes, yes, she is also in Bhagavatam because the life and activities of the devotees are also Bhagavatam. Yes, also Bhagavatam.” So in that way the life and activities of Prabhupada are also Bhagavatam. Bhagavatam illustrated.

Go Beyond Our Limits

In this way Krishna Consciousness, spreads all over the world to every town and village, and it’s wonderful. It’s actually wonderful, because in this way we change actually. We really change. We are forced to change. Change means to go beyond our limits. That’s what it means to change. To change means we have limits – and all these limits are there.

(mimics) “ Oh no I have my limits therefore I cannot change! If it was all without my limits than I would have been living like this for 99 years. No we cannot change “...

Become Saintly

Saintly people can touch the heart of all.
In this day and age, as soon as we speak about a saintly person, we turn to Srila Prabhupada first. He is the emblem for us of a saintly person. His qualities of saintliness are important and it is that which should be in the forefront in our spiritual life - to become saintly. It's not about belonging to a society, it's not about being part of a certain temple, it's not about belonging to a certain group of people. That's not enough. That's just some arrangement to give us some help and support in becoming saintly people.
Krsna says that the sadhus, the saintly persons, they are dear to Him. And Krsna is dear to the saintly persons and thus never for a moment, forgets the saintly persons. Not for a moment are they out of His mind.

Krishna arranged the suffering?

How is it that the all good, all merciful, kind Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is just full of love, who is just the well-wisher and friend of every living being, who cares about every little plant, every little jiva, how is it that the Supreme Lord (He is the Supreme Controller!) has arranged all these varieties of suffering that exist in this world? That question is very difficult to answer.
But it is an essential question for us if we want to love Krsna. We have to resolve this question. Otherwise, how can we love Krsna? If deep down in our heart there is any doubt about Krsna being in any way responsible for the suffering in this world, then how will we ever develop love of God?

Point to Krishna

Krsna is attractive. Krsna in the form of His Kirtan is attractive. Krsna in the form of Prasadam is attractive. Krsna in the form of Sastras is attractive. And in that way preaching is not difficult. We see that we have a festival, and we have lots of tents: Lots of stages: Big chairs: Garlands, and all these things. Actually it’s all simply based on worshiping Krsna. It’s putting Krsna on a pedestal. They make a few pedestals- a few stages and things- and we put Krsna there. Or Krsna’s devotee, who is Krsna’s representative: Who is speaking about Krsna. He sits a little higher and that’s simply advertising Krsna. Pointing to Krsna - like Srila Prabhupada would always point to Krsna!

Awesome lecture [Newcastle 2010]

Absolute Faith in Krsna

When we are more and more taking shelter of Krsna then we are sure that Krsna will protect us, then we are comfortable. Just like a child completely convinced, ‘My parents will protect me. No problem. If you try something with me I’ll call my father.’ ‘What do I care about your father?’ ‘No, no, I’ll call him. He is on my side.” So much faith, so much faith in the father. Amazing. So much faith in Krsna. The same absolute faith in Krsna.

Wait till you see the Chinese!

At one point I was leading a kirtan, and suddenly a group of sixty Chinese appeared. Really as Chinese as Chinese can be- originals! “Made in China- it said on the label!” They were there, and then they suddenly came right into the kirtan and I tell you that the efforts that they attained. The way these Chinese were dancing. You thought that the Africans have one up when it comes to dancing. Well…wait till you see the Chinese. They were going for it!

And I just realised that one billion people out there- are completely ready for Krishna Consciousness. Because it says that if you cook a pot of rice by one grain, you can test the pot. At least that’s what the ladies do. They can’t test every grain to see if it’s cooked…no. Take out one, soft: Not hard inside, than and it’s good, because nothing is more horrible than rice which is still hard on the inside. I just broke my Ekadasi with a uncooked Jaga- puri rice, which I find difficult.

Anyway so one tests the pot, by one grain. And simply by sixty Chinese, dancing with great enthusiasm. I realised that one Nation of over a billion is ready for Krsna!

Decorating The Heart...

By decorating the Lord we are decorating ourselves, that’s actually what’s going on. As we are decorating the Lord we are decorating ourselves with beautiful, wonderful qualities. So whatever we offer the Lord it actually reflects back on our own heart. The Lord, what does he need? It is like that, Srila Bhaktivinoda Takura is discussing it, that the rationalist will argue that, “Why are you offering the Absolute, why are you offering the Absolute vegetables from this world? Does the Absolute, the Absolute Truth, the eternal Absolute, does He depend on your temporary cauliflower? Why are you offering Him cauliflower, dhall and all these things? But the reason is exactly explained in this verse that by the offering one is actually decorating the heart. Because the Lord appreciates the love and devotion by which things are offered and that love and devotion will change the heart in a lasting manner. By once offering in love and devotion our heart gradually becomes ruled, becomes filled with love and devotion, little by little the heart becomes filled.

Vrndavana Natabara

It is described, “ Where is Krsna?”
“Oh, He is learning how to dance.”
“Oh? Who is His teacher?”
“Oh, it is Srimati Radharani, who is on the banks of the Yamuna and she is dancing in very many artistic ways and He is dancing behind.”
So in this way indeed Krsna is dancing behind His devotee who is capturing His heart by devotional service. As the devotee is trying to please Krsna, Krsna will dance around that devotee. Krsna will not only dance on our tongue but Krsna dances right in our life…

Stop being self-centred

We have to stop being self-centred. We have to stop being concerned with 'my' Krsna or 'my' maya. This time we have to become concerned about the Krsna Consciousness of others, and for that, we have to make a sacrifice. And if we make a sacrifice and we come out of our comfort zone, then we find that actually a bit of our own dilemmas are being overcome in the process of that and we find that probably within that sacrifice, we get the greatest purification. It automatically happens.

Stream Of Oppurtunities

Once on a Sunday Feast in Cologne temple, they had a clown. An original Russian clown from the state circus. And they’re quite good, and he was spinning balls on his fingers: He was spinning them on his toes: Four at the same time: And the fifth one on a stick on his nose! That was impressive. Absolutely, what it had to do with Krishna Consciousness, I have no idea! But anyway after that, I gave the class, and Krsna gave me some inspiration. And the theme was about the stream of opportunities. And when one is young, one takes three or four of them and bounces them around in a playful way, like that. Waste a few, but then as time moves along, that playfulness disappears, and one becomes more purposeful. That was a good one. Good one there, take it. But as time moves along, every once and a while it becomes difficult to keep up with the endless stream or opportunities, and sometimes one lets one go. Anyway,it wasn’t that good anyway. The sour grapes philosophy comes in. And at the end there were two old people. Both seated on a bench at the stream of opportunities and one said to the other , “ That was a good one!” And that’s more or less how time effects us all! So even the devotee doesn’t escape those dynamics. Even the devotee will not be eternally youthful. Unless he has a spiritual body like Narada Muni. Even if he practises all the yoga in the world. Still, sooner or later, some joints start to squeak. That is the nature of the material world. Therefore when it is said that the devotee is not affected by old age. It obviously doesn’t mean that he remains physically fit forever.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, April 2010)

Waiting for something to happen

How do we go forward? It demands work going forward – maybe faster than we can handle. Or for years, it’s always like that. For years you are waiting for something to happen – just like initiation. For years you are waiting – they keep you waiting, - a little bit longer. And when, you waited and waited, then suddenly, if there’s a last minute interview, and then you go through that and before you know it- you are approved. Two days later you are sitting in the sacrifice, and suddenly you just go’ “ Oh…oh….not so fast, wait a minute!”. And your mind is going, “ Whooaaa- what’s happening”, And are you really ready to make progress for the whole life? ” Well, umm”

“What are the four regulative principles?” Some people can’t say it. And some people really forget all four. Number one, “ What are you not suppose to eat?”
(No answer), “ No meat, and what swims in the water?”

So it is like that, many times – that suddenly it happens and then – yeah there you go. And then its there, getting very serious, and then you’ve done it- taken initiation.

Japa Meditations

A Japa meditation prayer by Kadamba Kanana Swami

I could be humble, if i would be honest
and admit that I have no special qualities,
that I am full of fault
and have no devotion
then I could chant all the time
now I can't

If I would be humble and tolerant
then maybe I could attract Krsna
Rupa and Sanatana's extraordinary humility
was more than the Lord could tolerate

I am proud of achievements qualities and possessions
that i don't really have
they are only lend to me
and will be taken by time

All these false attributes distract me
If only I could be humble
I could take shelter of Krsna
                                                     and chant all the time

i am nothing, Satvarupa said,
You are not nothing but something
Prabhupada retorted,
but you are not what you think you are.

If only I could be a servant of my spiritual master
of Krsna and the vaisnavas
maybe then I could chant hare krsna
Can you pray for me
that I will improve?

Lord Caitanya's Smile

It is said that when Lord Caitanya smiled upon the universe then suddenly the people in the universe felt inspired towards spiritual life, suddenly they showed interest in spiritual life …and we always thought is it was us! “Yes, I was actually always interested in spiritual life. As long as I can remember I was always interested…” It was simply Lord Caitanya’s smile...

KADAMBA KANANA SWAMI:
First my thanks to all of you, for all you have done in your spiritual life. And all you have done for today and said. Because it’s all voluntary, and it’s just so rare to turn to Krsna in this day and age when the glitter of Maya’s arrangements is so bright! All around us and so all present. That is just very difficult to take this very other worldly Krishna Consciousness serious. But you all did and that is wonderful! And yes whatever I could do to be of some inspiration - Of course that is my pleasure.
It’s very nice if you can be of some inspiration to other people. I mean that gives you a purpose in life. So as you are all speaking words of appreciation. Well I thank you for your appreciation- Your appreciation is giving me strength...

No need for anything else

The C.C. says that the chanting of the Hare Krsna Mahamantra is complete and there is no need for anything else. One can stop everything and just chant the Hare Krsna Mahamantra and then everything will be fine.
We see that the great and pure devotees, they just minimise all the practical things and just chant. Krsna will make all the arrangements.

Absorbed...

To be absorbed means that Krsna must become everything. It cannot just be like we like Krsna Consciousness amongst many other things that we also like, we really like it, we really think its nice. Krsna consciousness, good also, and inspiring but we are not completely convinced that Krsna consciousness…well it hasn’t captured us to the point where it has become everything. Why is that? It is because we haven’t made service everything.

Krishna The Thief

It is said that Krsna steals our vision, He steals our ability to hear, He steals the function of all our senses - that is Krsna. Thus one who has seen Krsna cannot see anything else. He becomes blind. He becomes deaf. He becomes dumb. He cannot speak about mundane subjects anymore.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Radhastami 2009, South Africa)

Krishna Is Your Best friend

Prabhupada once said to one devotee,”Take shelter of Krsna, because Krsna is your best friend”
So this devotee said, “ Srila Prabhupada actually you are our best friend !”
Prabhupada said, “No, I’m not your best friend, Krsna is your best friend, because I may disappoint you, but Krsna never will!”

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Durban South Africa, 11th April 2010)

Coming Closer...

Just like one female disciple of Srila Prabhupada was in New Vrndavana and at that time Srila Prabhupada had come to New Vrndavana after a long time. There was really no road; they used to call it the Agasura road. It was like a curving road through the hills. No car could drive there so they decided to carry Prabhupada in a palanquin. And it was evening time and many devotees were surrounding Prabhupada and they were all carrying torches. So it was like something out of a book: Prabhupada being carried on a palanquin, torch lights all around and everyone was just in ecstasy so one of the ladies had a desire to be close, close to Prabhupada. Somehow or other she got right next to Srila Prabhupada only to realize that she was still very far away from Prabhupada. That’s the fact. One cannot come close through physical proximity. Not possible. One can only come close in service. If one has done something to please the spiritual master. Then one is closer. Then one is closer than they were before. If you have done something extra-ordinary…”

The Real Judgement

The only thing that we overlook is that Lord Caitanya is not judging us by what we achieve but He is judging us by the endeavor we make. Its more the endeavor that we make that counts than actually the results. We so are used to systems of exams where the numbers, you know, the final numbers, on which you are being judged. How much percent did you get? You’re judged on the percent. But in spiritual life it’s, “How hard did you try?” In this age that is what invokes the mercy of Lord Caitanya, that is the special feature…

Taking the Bhagavatam to Heart

We need to go deep in our own sadhana, in our own chanting, in our own reading. And Srila Prabhupada’s complaint still stands, “my complaint is that my disciples don’t read my books.” Prabhupada’s complaint, that’s a big issue and what are we doing about it? Nothing! That’s the issue! So maybe we can take that point to heart and make an endeavor to realize that Prabhupada’s complaint still stands for us also. The same laziness, same laziness...

complete absorption

Srimati Radharani couldn't tolerate a second, a moment, a fraction of a moment without remembering Krsna. Now that is meditation!
Speaking about meditation, it goes a little further than staring in the water, it goes a little deeper than breathing through pranayam - it is a matter of complete absorption!

Higher than Vrindavana

In one sense one is serving Guru by serving Iskcon because Iskcon is a transcendental movement so one remains in devotional service and as long as one is situated in devotional service, one is still connected with the spiritual master. But there are different levels in which one can serve the spiritual master. Lord Caitanya had a servant who was such an expert servant that he already understood what the Lord wanted before the Lord even spoke about it. So the first - class servant is trying to do not what he wants to do, but do what the spiritual master wants him to do in Krsna Consciousness.
For example, it is stated that there is one place that is higher than Vrindavan - that is the place assigned by the Guru.

Latest Report from Kadamba Kanana Swami: Sadhana Retreat 2010, Germany

We had a nice weekend in the Sadhana Retreat in Germany.( all in German) Finally the weather was good. We spent our time hearing and chanting. we especially got in to Jagannatha Puri. We had nice bhajans out on the field, on top of the mountain on the bank of the lake in the sunshine. And we heard about Lord Caitanya in Jagannatha Puri and devotees performed the pastime of Maharaja Prataparudra who finally got the darsana of Lord Caitanya, while the king was dressed as a common man, he entered the garden where Caitanya Mahaprabhu was lying down after dancing for hours in Ratha Yatra and after honoring prasada, then the king massaged the Lord's lotus feet and recited verses from the five chaters in SB 10th Canto dealing with Rasa Lila. It was the suitable place, in the Jagannatha Vallabha gardens, because these gardens are non-different from Vrndavana.

Without limitation...

Imagine, Krsna along with His eternally, liberated associates is enjoying His amazing, transcendental pastimes without limitation! And we are thinking of the material world, while chanting Krsna's holy name.

Kadamba Kanana Swami, Japa Talks, 07 July 2010

Always Remember Krishna, Never Forget Him

Then Krsna thought, I want to bring all living beings to the spiritual world where they can be eternally happy, but I don't want them to wait so long, therefore I will bring the spiritual world right here to the material world. (sanskrit) In the form of this sankirtan movement all the wealth of the spiritual world is already present. Thus here, right now, we can already be free from the material world. Right now, we can be in the spiritual world - internally at least. Externally, maybe not, but internally we can be in the spiritual world, simply by always remembering Krsna. That is the purpose of all spiritual practices - to always remember Krsna and to never forget Him.

“ Sri Vishnu, Sri Vishnu, Sri Vishnu”

To simply think of what does Krsna require? How is Krsna comfortable? Not to think of what is allowed within the limitations of all the regulative principles of Krishna Consciousness, and then try to stretch the envelope- so to speak, Try and stretch the boundaries.

Obviously if it’s all about just reading the label and it has no forbidden ingredients- then it’s all right. From one level it’s all right. In another level it’s obviously not all right. In the level that at least not breaking the regulative principles – it’s all right. But in the terms of what consciousness there is, in that preparation- I don’t know. But it’s not going to be all right...

If someone cannot stop eating fish

If someone cannot stop eating fish, for whatever reason and has a justification for it,- alright we can have some patience. We can still engage such a person, in someway or another in the process. And that regulative principle can come a little later.
It’s not that on the first day people come through the door, that all the regulative principles have to be followed. Or even some people that regularly come to the temple. It can come gradual- step by step. But we should not say it’s alright. We should’nt justify it. We should explain our reasons; “It’s not alright, , it's not good.”
And of course if these people feel it themselves - they know very well!

The modern society is organised in such a way that it’s basically weakening, weakening determination - because austerity is so much removed, that even the basic struggle for existence has been reduced to having to push a button – which is kind of hurts the finger!

Krsna churns the heart of the devotee

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 22/04/10)

Krsna churns the heart of the devotee. So Krsna had the desire to bring Narada to a higher level, so He didn’t make Himself so cheap. He gave him an incentive at a earlier stage of life, to really dedicate himself. And then He waited till Narada had evolved further. At the end of that life, He gave him that ultimate position....

'Cracked'

The material world, they’ll never get it under control- like some managers begin to hold their head in despair. It’s a fact, there’s no hope- It’s a lost battle.

In English, there’s a saying “ If it isn’t broke then don’t fix it”. I think we can turn it around, “ If it is broke…right…than there’s no way that it’s ever going to be fixed”. That’s the material world. It’s fundamentally broken, no matter what. And anyone who is trying to fix it is “cracked”, as they say in India! ....So it’s a bottomless pit.

Developing love for Krsna!

We should recognise our relationship with Krsna, how we are naturally attracted to Krsna, and allow ourselves to be inspired, instead of just mechanically... well, is this Krsna Consciousness just a matter of being a member of something? (imitating) I am a member of the K.B. Youth Group - I have a t-shirt. Is that it?
No, we're more serious. It's about chanting, it's about following regulative principles.
Good, good, good, but ultimately it's about developing love for Krsna!
Ah, that's so high!
It's not so high, because Krsna is quite nice. We can love Him today!

Supreme Lord becomes the servant

Krsna is the protector of His devotees. Didn't Krsna do everything for the Pandavas? Wasn't Krsna the messenger for Yuddhistir Maharaj? The Supreme Lord acted as a messenger! In other words, we are remembering Krsna as Parthasarti, the chariot driver of Arjuna, the messenger of Yuddhistir, basically, the servant of His devotee. So this is the Bhagavad Gita - that the devotee becomes the servant of the Lord and the Lord becomes the servant of His devotee. That is unique to Bhagavad Gita. You don't find it anywhere else, you don't find it in any other religious scripture in the world: that kind of intimacy where the Supreme Lord becomes the servant of His devotee.
The more the devotee serves Krsna, the more Krsna serves the devotee. So this is actually what Krsna Consciousness is meant to be

It will not endure

I was listening to a lecture by Swami Prabhupada about relationships that do not endure. He was saying that a father has a small son. He is so affectionate to his son, the son is so affectionate in this relationship. His affection is so deep and Prabhupada said it's not endurable. Later it will change - that same son will revolt against his father. He will disappoint his father. He will hurt his father who will feel like: 'I've done so much for him..how can he treat me like this?'
Prabhupada says it will not endure. Nothing endures except relationships that are spiritual.

Sincerity - not enough

Srila Prabhupada asked this question: what will it take for this movement to go on?
He asked it to his leading men. They were afraid because the question was asked with a lot of intensity, so it was quiet for a while.
Finally, one said, "Sincerity."
Srila Prabhupada said, "No, that's not enough!"
Everyone was , well, saying, sincerity is not enough? Then what else?
Prabhupada said, "Intelligence!. It takes intelligence for this movement to go on."
So this is what we are looking at - sincerity and intelligence!

Unfulfilled

Why is Krsna getting impatient? He is not getting impatient for Himself. He is not getting impatient just that He can't wait for us to return. He is getting impatient because He knows that we are unfulfilled. Even if we are not terribly suffering, there is no other destiny than to be unfulfilled outside the spiritual world, outside of a relationship with Krsna. Therefore, when Krsna is employing a little bit of force to bring us back, that is for our own good, because here there is no way, no way we can be fulfilled
