How can you realise it within the heart?

(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, Prague, Czech Republic, 15th March 2012) Lecture: SB.4.9.6

It's one thing to hear everything, but how can you actually realise it? So Sanatana Goswami was very much aware of the dilemma of a devotee. We are receiving divya-jnana – transcendental knowledge, but how can you realise it within the heart? That is the lifetime challenge that we are facing!

Time is passing by and still we have not realised this knowledge within the heart, and life itself is testing us! Life itself is bringing all kinds of circumstances. Sometimes unexpected promise of happiness; suddenly everything looks like spring – fresh and very light and effulgent, you never expected it. It came so late in life:

'Maybe I'll be happy after all, even if it's not eternal. But maybe just for a little while.'

Anyway, shortly after that, one comes back to reality – the reality of the material world. One takes birth and cries. One grows old and dies! So like that the material world is not a place where life is so wonderful! Dhruva Maharaja experienced it at a young age but he didn't have the full realization. The realization that there is no point in trying to create happiness in the material world. Again and again we try:

‘Okay maybe it didn't work for 27,583 times but maybe it's going to work on the 27584 time. You never know, it is possible!’

In this way the living being is full of hope. You know that there is no hope! But they are still hoping:

'No we will be happy!'

It didn't happen to the neighbours and any of our relatives, but somehow or other it will surely happen to us. I'm sure, and I feel it. So like this we are very inspired!

Strengthening our own life

(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, Prague, Czech Republic, 15th March 2012) Lecture: CC. Adi-lila 17.22

We have to first strengthen our own life, and then when we are dealing with the world we can think of different ways to build bridges for people. If you walk in these sannyas clothing, through a small village then people sometimes are so shocked that they act as thought they don't see you, because it's too shocking for them to deal with something like this is in the village. So that happens sometimes.

Therefore we can adjust a little bit to people, if we want to introduce them to Krishna Consciousness, and we could give them some goulash, alcohol free beer, decaf coffee, and some cigars without nicotine. That's good for people who are new, but for us it's not so good.

So one has to know the limits. One has to know that in our own life everything should be connected with Krishna so that it can give us strength!

The best of the best!

(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, Prague, Czech Republic, 15th March 2012) Lecture: CC. Adi-lila 17.22

Krishna is always having picnics with the cowherd boys and so on. Krishna's mother is always worried that Krishna is not satisfied. They give Him the best. Everyday He gets the best of the best! Then He goes and eats with the neighbours. For Krishna He takes breakfast in the morning at home and then it stays breakfast time since He also takes breakfast at the other homes. After that He goes stealing for yoghurt from other peoples' houses and gives feeds it to the monkeys. Then they ask:

'Why are you giving it to the monkeys?'

He said:

'They did so much service for Me in My last life.'

When He was Rama, then the monkeys were helping Him. So in this way Krishna spends the whole day eating. So some people say to Nanda Maharaja:

'Oh you have such a wonderful son!'

Nanda Maharaja said:

'What do you mean? He is a problem Child! Very lusty! He eats all the time!'

And His mother is trying to give Him the best! She has special cows who eat special grass, so they give milk that is special, and from this special milk she makes special sweets! And still it's never enough. So that's Krishna, He can eat unlimited and His associates also!

Krishna and the cowherd boys just eat and eat. No problem, it's never a problem. Madhumangal – He can eat one million ladhus!

I was in Vrindavan (In India) for six years, and then they sent me to Australia. They paid for my ticket. When I came to the temple, the temple president said:

'Do you have any money left from the money that we had sent you?'

I said:

'Yes, I do.'

I wanted to give it to him but he said:

'No, no you keep it. Buy some clothes for yourself and your wife.'

So we are buying clothes and saying that he is a really nice guy.

The next day he calls us again into his office and asks:

'So how are you going to pay your debt?'

I replied:

'Why didn't you tell me yesterday? Before I brought all the clothes.'

Then he said that I had to pay it back by selling paintings. I said:

'Okay, I'll sell the paintings.'

So they took me in the car and drove me to the middle of an area full of factories. As I am walking in the street and I see a sign:

'Blood and bones, $20.'

And I'm thinking:

'Whose blood and bones?'

So I go into the first factory, which is a place where they kill chickens! There was a guy who was chopping them one after another and throwing each dead chicken onto the conveyor belt. I showed him the paintings, and he brought four hundred dollars worth, and there was blood on the money – intense.

Then for one month I did all the slaughterhouses. I came to one where there were big bins. In these bins there were heads, legs and tails from many different animals. There was a huge kettle where they were cooking all of these things! This kettle was actually a huge pressure cooker, and this is where they made the stabilisers, thickeners and all these nice substances!

So since that time I made sure that whatever I had, has no stabilisers, no thickeners, and not even in my toothpaste. So you have to start somewhere. Whatever comes natural? You can understand that for me that came very natural! After seeing that I'm careful about 'E' numbers and similar things. That was intense!

Purifying everything

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 01:28 PM PDT

(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, Prague, Czech Republic, 15th March 2012) Lecture: CC. Adi-lila 17.22

Make your phone Krishna Conscious. Well I guess that a few of these applications have got to go, and put some KC music, some KC lectures on there and pictures of devotees. In this way purify the phone. Is your computer a devotee or a karmi? You may have joined the Hare Krishna movement but did your computer also join the Hare Krishna movement? We have to shave him up! Then gradually only pure things come out of the computer!

Even the shopping has to be purified. Pure shopping. Pure unadulterated shopping, with total dedication. You have to give your heart to shopping. You have to shop with your heart to things that are only related to Krishna! So if you can use it for Krishna then buy it. Otherwise forget it, it's rubbish. In this way we purify everything – every aspect of our life! Everything has to be a sacred space.

Make your house a holy place! I once visited someone who had painted all the walls black, and the door blood red! It was intense. If you live in a place like that then what will happen to you? I was wondering that:

‘What would happen to you if you live in a room where everything is black and the doors are red?’

You feel like dressing up as Dracula! So a room has an influence on the consciousness. What goes on your wall goes in your head, and in your heart, since it affects your consciousness. Then you have all the hocus pocus, and you have to put the water pot in the north east corner of the room. But that also improves the atmosphere of the house. So living in a house is not just about:

'Well, okay I have got to put my shoes somewhere. We need a bed and a table.'

No, the house is a reflection of our consciousness and it also affects our consciousness…If we put all transcendental things in the house then we start to feel transcendental! And not just in our house but also in our life. So in this way we build a spiritual life.

Do it for Krishna!

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 02:24 PM PDT

(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, Prague, Czech Republic, 15th March 2012) Lecture: CC. Adi-lila 17.22

Umapati was one of Prabhupada's disciples and he asked Prabhupada:

'What comes from this chanting?'

Prabhupada said:

'From chanting comes more chanting!'

So it is like that, from, chanting comes more chanting! One simply feels that:

'Yes we must do this again!'

When we get absorbed in chanting then we forget everything. Well maybe not everything, but it is sort of during the chanting usually it's okay. Afterwards the harsh reality returns, but still we think:

'That chanting did give me a boost!'

So we must do it again, and that is the nature of chanting. Yes the chanting is non-different from Krishna. So we are meeting with Krishna, but our senses are just dull, they are not awakened. Therefore we have no taste!

So spiritual life is about turning to Krishna, and we can take material things and use them for Krishna! And all these material things become spiritualised – whatever it is. So we can do ordinary work for Krishna! Whatever it is, if you like to fix cars, fix Krishna's cars! If you like to grow potatoes, grow potatoes for Krishna. If you like to make money, make money for Krishna. Or if you just have to suffer because of your karma then suffer for Krishna! So somehow or other whatever it is, do it for Krishna, so that we live in the material world in that way. But that's not everything, since then there are times when we spend directly with Krishna by chanting Krishna's name and by hearing about Him, and these two things are very important!

The peak of all self-realization!

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 03:35 PM PDT

(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, Nove Sady, Czech Republic, 14th March 2012) Lecture: SB 11.5.32

Devotee: Do you think agree that there maybe a thousand and more ways of achieving a peace of mind?

Maharaja: No, I don't think so…to really have a peace of mind, then one needs to become self-realized, and ultimately that means that one has to dedicate his life in service to the Supreme. Nothing else can really satisfy the heart!

Devotee: Do you agree that there are a thousand and more ways to achieve self-realization?

Maharaja: You see there are thousands of roads that lead to a mountain, but there is only one peak on a mountain. So I'm looking at the peak and I'm not looking at the roads. At the end you will see that all these other ways may lead up to the mountain, and you may go up to the mountain and come from the one side and from the other side, but there is only one peak to the mountain. So whether you come to the Japanese tradition or the African tradition or to an ancient Czech tradition, ultimately the essence of it all is that we come to the realization:

'I am the eternal servant of God. Of all the things in this world, He is the most attractive, and therefore as His servant I serve Him out of love!'

That's the peak of all self-realization! There maybe many roads but there is only one peak. All roads come to the mountain and you go up to the mountain and at the top we serve God out of love! That's what I call self-realization!

By nature we are servants. We have to be the servant. Everyone is the servant. Who is not a servant? Everyone in this room is a servant. We all have to serve somebody: Serve the children, serve the boss, and serve someone. The president of the country is a servant. But who is the highest to serve? It's God! The most wonderful, all attractive, Supreme!

So ultimately self-realization is there. So what other forms of self-realizations are there?

Devotee: Worshiping the nature of Shamanism.

Maharaja: Well worshiping nature is the path, because what is the origin of nature? We worship nature as a path, it's not the goal. It's not just about nature. What is behind nature? So if we go deeper in that path, you worship nature, and next the question is: Where is nature coming from? Then we look at nature in deeper level, and we see it comes from spirit. We see nature inebriate, then we are worshiping the spirit, and when we look at the spirit in all its manifestation, and we see that spirit has an impersonal aspect, and a personal aspect.

If one focuses on the impersonal aspect, then one can become free from all suffering. But if one is focusing on the personal aspect of the Supreme spirit then one can experience love. So with the impersonal experience one can become free from the material suffering. But only on a personal aspect can one experience real love. So therefore it leads to the same ultimate realization, that we are the loving servants of the Personal Supreme Lord eternally!

Do loving relationships work?

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 02:12 PM PDT

(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, Nove Sady, Czech Republic, 14th March 2012) Lecture: SB 11.5.32
When you get involved with people in loving relationships, then it's not easy. If both are worshiping Krishna, then it may work. But if there is no Krishna and only relationships with people, well then forget it! I will tell you that you will have a hard time, because then everyone is thinking of himself, and then he is thinking:

'She is here for my enjoyment!'

She is thinking:

'And he's here for mine.'

And the whole relationship is about pulling at each other – who's going to work for who? Who's the boss? Krishna is the boss, He really is, so what can you d, since we are not, because we are not in control.

Therefore, we have to accept that Krishna is in control, He is the Supreme controller. So when the spiritual element is there within the relationship, then the relationships begins to work; then an aspect of selflessness enters into the relationship and that is the essence!

The control of the mind

Posted: 25 Mar 2012 03:21 PM PDT

(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, Nove Sady, Czech Republic, 14th March 2012) Lecture: SB 11.5.32

Everyone has to control the mind. When you walk into a shop and the mind says:

'Put it in your pocket.'

But the intelligence says:

'No!'

This is called controlling of the mind. So the control of the mind happens all of the time. Sometimes you have to bite your tongue, since you can't say everything you want. So sometimes one has to smile when he doesn't want to smile. So everyone is practising to control the mind. For the people who cannot control their mind, then they have to be put into the hospital! But there is one thing that controls the mind automatically, like there is a child, and the mind of the mother's is automatically controlled by the child. You don't have to tell them to control your mind and think of your child, since they automatically think of the child.

One thing that controls the mind is that when we do it out of love then that controls the mind, because parents love their children and children automatically control the mind. So the idea is the in bhakti-yoga we are discovering the wonderful qualities of Krishna, and then automatically we begin to realise that Krishna is wonderful. Then one day we say:

'I just love Krishna, I really do!'

Then the mind is automatically controlled. So this is a nice thing, about controlling the mind in Krishna Consciousness! Especially in the beginning one cannot be so spontaneous since one has attachments to them things, so then you have to control the mind and the senses just by intelligence. But that is not a very strong position, because some days you feel like:

'I can't always live like this. Sometimes I have to just be spontaneous.'

Therefore in the beginning we control the mind based on higher knowledge, but later on the mind becomes controlled by attraction to Krishna and that is better! And once you become attracted to Krishna then you can become spontaneous.

There's no need to go here and there. Just worship Krishna. Serve Krishna. Offer what we eat to Krishna. Whatever we do, then do it as an offering to Krishna, and the result is that you will become peaceful. Nothing else works!

My father tried the bottle it didn't work. He never became peaceful. My brother tried something else that also didn't work since he didn't become peaceful either. And I don't think that the guys in the casino are very peaceful. I don't think that erotic shops make you very peaceful , but it is the Bhagavad Gita that makes you peaceful!
