Taste or no taste- you are getting a lot of mercy!

Sometimes we think that, “My chanting, to be very honest, is hopeless. My chanting is of such a bad quality that when I try to chant and fix my mind on the Holy Name it tends to go everywhere and anywhere except the Name. Even if by chance it touches the Name, than it is for a micro second. It is very, very difficult to concentrate while chanting.” What can be said?

Some people become discouraged when they think of how much stress there is in the scripture about the attentive chanting. And they feel actually thoroughly discouraged because-it does not work- no matter what they do. And they feel very guilty, and thus their spiritual life is just mixed with guilt and failure and depression and all these type of things.

Not required! Of course we must try to improve our concentration in chanting. And there are techniques, and we will get to that. But first of all one has to have the faith that even if my chanting is not perfect- it does not matter- in one sense- because at least if I am trying, than it is nama-abhasa, and nama-abhasa will purify the heart without the doubt. This works anyway- one makes anyway spiritual advancement. And because of that purification eventually one will come to pure chanting. In this way we should with full courage, and with great hope embark upon the chanting of the Maha Mantra.

And we should realize the even although I have no taste for this chanting, that also does not matter. Someone wrote me a letter and it was one of these letters, “I have stopped chanting, because I just have no taste for it”, that’s it- I have no taste. So what? Who cares that you have no taste? You are getting a lot of mercy. Taste or no taste- you are getting a lot of mercy from it. Maybe the taste is not there, but the mercy is just amazing! So therefore do it anyway.

Not everything in this world is so full of taste, but if it is beneficial - you do it. You are also working- that is also not always full of taste, but you like the money. Isn’t it? Yes? Well, this chanting is a lot of wealth- spiritual wealth- not just material wealth. Because material wealth is temporary and how much pleasure can it give… besides that it is temporary, the pleasure that one gets from material wealth is limited. And the nature of matter is that it is basically different form spirit, and therefore it can never offer fulfillment to the soul. So no matter how good it is in the material world, even if it is the best- it is still not good enough to satisfy the soul.

Yes, whereas a spirit is of a different nature. In the material sense the dream is always greater than the reality- Have you also experienced that? Your dream- than- the reality… yes… The spiritual reality- the dream and then the reality exceeds the dream. In the spiritual sense, the reality is greater than anything one could dream.

Hypocrisy in the heart ?!

Chowpatty Devotee talks about the fact that our heart should be clean, but despite doing everything i.e rounds and rising early still there is hypocrisy in the heart that one doesn’t want to expose this truth to others because of the desire to maintain a nice image of one’s self. The question then the devotee asks is:
‘How can we be thoroughly open and say in front of everyone ‘This is what I am’ ?’

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 02/2010):
There are many factors that block us from this kind of honesty. One is our pride, our false pride - What will people think? What will they say? That is one fear. Another fear comes also that in this age it is difficult to trust anyone. Love yes, but trust...you know what I’m saying! Trust someone is not easy.
‘Trust? We love you so much, but trust?!’
Trust is difficult in this age because who can you trust? ...

The extraordinary wealth of India

27 March 2010

In my youth I started a journey in search for the deeper meaning of life. This journey took me to India, which greatly inspired me and again and again I was drawn to return to the land of Bharata. So much good in my life began in India, I remain greatly indebted. I gradually absorbed more and more of the culture and tradition based on the Vedas, my stay in that sacred land has transformed my life. I began to embrace principles of dharma and morality, of ahimsa, non violence and kindness to all living beings, I began to yearn for God. Then I had the good fortune to come across the bhakti movement of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, which, with it's roots in India, has been introduced worldwide in modern times by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, I became his follower. Now thirty-two years later I travel around the world as a sannyasi and spiritual teacher...

Chanting is about being a servant of Krsna

Japa Talks- 27 March 2010

Kadamba Kanana Swami, Johannesburg, South Africa

I spent the night in the home of devotees. I rose at 3:45 took bath and chanted 17 rounds straight through without interruption. This is my preferred way of chanting, there is better concentration that way. But at the same time it is only about the mechanical arrangements of the favorable time and place. One can chant at any time, in any place. Chanting is about being a servant of Krsna, then it is not difficult.

Empowerment through: Vani and Vapu

Vani and Vapu

Instructions can actually empower a devotee and are very important, There we take our spiritual strength. So this is one aspect of empowerment.

Another important aspect is the special mercy of a devotee that can totally change us. Just by association with a devotee we can immediately become transformed.

Serving the spiritual master- Part 5

Being on the cutting edge

The art of the guru disciple relationship is very intricate and it requires a lot of work. It's not automatic, it is not just by some mental adjustments, "Now I am going to be a disciple"- one has to really work to be a disciple! It is not a simple thing! And only then, if one is on the cutting edge in that relationship, that one is spiritually enlivened. But if one is not on the cutting edge in the relationship with one's spiritual master then spiritual life is kind of on a low flow and the inspiration is just not very high. And it's going on and one may be nicely situated in an asrama, in hearing and chanting and so on, but it is not really happening deep in one's heart. One must be on the cutting edge in one's relationship with the spiritual master...

Material world - Designed for Frustration!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 2010)

There is no question of happiness within if one is not remembering Krishna. Without remembering Krishna we are simply controlled by the three modes of material nature which gives us endless varieties of so called pleasures and sufferings. But these experiences in the material energy are simply leading to frustration because no matter what one experiences in the material world it can never match the desire.
The desire is always greater than what we get...

Give up the enjoying spirit and be a servant

This enjoying spirit is very deep in us. In the first instance the enjoying spirit is there to enjoy the material energy, and in the second instance, the enjoying spirit is there to enjoy the spiritual energy. But that is also to be given up. One has to come to the point of being totally the servant.
We see the classical example of Daruka who became overwhelmed by his ecstatic symptons, didn't like these symptons because it interfered with his service - so the service had become more important than the enjoying spirit. This is what we want to see in Krsna Consciousness.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 2003)

Krishna Is Also A Person

Seventh offense is to commit sinful activities on the strength of the Holy Name.
Yes to commit sinful activities and then think:
'Yes but I am chanting so that will fix it.’
No, then you think this chanting is a mechanical process, but it’s not. It’s Krishna who is taking away the impurities - so Krishna doesn’t like it obviously if on one hand you are committing sinful activities and on the other hand we come to Him with lots of praying.

‘Not interested in your prayer, no thanks, you can pray as much as you like - For you no mercy’
Krishna is a person. If someone was to treat us like that:
‘Oh, you are so nice, you are so nice’ Meanwhile behind our backs do all kinds of things. We will not be kind to someone like that. Krishna also.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 03/2010)

What we do, How we do and then Who we are

In the beginning of Krsna Consciousness our objective may be in what we do - to do the right thing, but with time progressing, it's not just doing the right things, but it's also how we do them, and then it becomes more important not just what we do, but also who we are. And then our personal qualities become more important, and eventually that is the outstanding feature of a Vaishnava - his extraordinary qualities.

Solid Support

In the beginning it’s easy, you take the vows and it feels good to leave all these dark sinful things behind. But after some time the vows begin to feel a little narrow and it takes more than just fixing the mind:
‘I shall do it, I will do it!’
That makes you tired after a while!
(Maharaja says in a slow exhausted tired voice) ‘I willll doooo it’

So that is not easy. We need to do something to support the vows.
These vows will stand by some solid support.

What does it mean to become serious?

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 02/2010)

We come to this temple, not just because there is nice atmosphere and nice prasasdam, that is one thing:
‘Because it is a nice thing to do on the Sunday...what else is there to do?! And it doesn’t cost anything? It is cheap also!’

No, that is not why we come. We come here because we realised that it is not so cheap but actually it is very precious. That it is a very precious opportunity, a very precious opportunity.
(sanskrit) So many lives we have already spent chewing the chewed - many life times! Now this lifetime we give to Krishna. And what will we do, will we become serious? What does it mean to become serious? What does it mean?...

Distributing The Raining Mercy

Through the spiritual master it is Lord Krsna who delivers the devotee. The same principle of samsara dava.. the cloud that is raining down the mercy - the spiritual master is that cloud who is extinguishing the burning fire of material life ,samsara, but he gets his mercy from the ocean of mercy which is the Supreme Lord. So the spiritual master is acting on behalf of Krsna...
Every devotee, from the day that we come to the sankirtan movement, we are getting a little receptacle, a little container by which we can distribute mercy, and over the years that container may grow.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 2003)

Serving the spiritual master- Part 4

Accepting the blessings as it comes

It is true that the spiritual master wants more, he wants increase. And not only the spiritual master, Krsna wants increase- eternally so! That's why this whole seperation business is going on...It's not easy to please the spiritual master.

Sometimes someone is acting in a way that is reasonably acceptable according to devotional standards. So the spiritual master ought to be pleased. And then what if he's not pleased???... (Dramatic) 'The problem is that my spiritual master is unreasonable...he's too demanding!' But a spiritual master cannot be too demanding, it is not possible. Even if he's very demanding, that's a blessing! So one must somehow or other accept it as it comes...

I Love My Son Like Anything!

Generally we call it love in this world, but as long as there is a selfish element in it, that’s not love, real love is completely selfless.

‘Oh I love my son like anything...I want him to be a doctor! So that he can give glory to the family. I want the best for him ....he shall become a doctor!’

‘Help! I’m afraid of blood’
‘Doesn’t matter you shall become a doctor!’

‘No, the thought of going to a hospital...’
‘Anyway you shall be a doctor,
Yes bring glory to the family’

Not One Way Traffic

In Krsna Consciousness we see that the relationship with the Lord is not some sort of one-way traffic. It is not that the Lord is a kind of all-pervading benedicting Loving Lord who is has love upon the living beings equally, but we are having a personal Lord who is very personally involved with His devotees.
Yes, He is that all-benedicting all-pervading impartial loving Personality for those who are not surrendered unto Him, but for those who are surrendered unto Him the Lord is emotionally involved with the devotee...
Krsna is as much emotionally involved with the devotee as the devotee is with Krsna.

Prabhupada - The Kind Human Being

We meet him in everything he left. We meet him in his devotees, we meet him in his books, we meet him in his instructions and so on. We can meet Prabhupada today, but the essence of that meeting is that we understand that Prabhupada made Krsna Consciousness possible because Prabhupada was a human being! He was a human being! We are only just beginning to understand that! ...

Serving the spiritual master- Part 3

Many small adjustments make a big one
It's not a small thing, it's not an intellectual adjustment where one makes a solemn declaration: (Dramatic) 'From today on I will surrender! On this Vyasa Puja, in my offering, I solemnly swear that from now on, I will surrender...!'...Well, read your offering next year!
(Dramatic) 'Dear Guru Maharaja, although I last year promised to solemnly surrender, again I miserably failed another year and even I didn't try so hard- what can I do? I'm so fallen, please be merciful on your hopeless disciple. Not even your real servant- simply trying to- aspiring to be your servant...not even really aspiring yet- trying to aspire to be a servant...!'
And we can write Vyasa Puja offerings in that way. Because to really become that servant means that we we have to little by little make many small adjustments. Many small adjustments make a big one! That's it!
To dramatically make an announcement, 'I'm going to completely adjust my life' is a joke! I did it the day I joined and it was a joke! What can I say...we have to actually step by step fine-tune. And the more we try to do that, the more Krsna will reveal what the next step is...

From Struggling To Being Inspired!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 2003)

If you have a car and the tyre is leaking a little bit, then you can keep on driving, put a little air every once in a while. So sometimes we see also that in Krsna Consciousness we just get really burnt out and you know like:

'How do you feel?' 'Oh, terrible!' 'Why?' 'I didn't read for 3 days!'
' No! You didn't read for 3 days! Terrible! Quick, Quick, here's a book!'

Initiation - Planting of Pearls - Grows into Bushes of Pearls

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 08/03/2010)

Initiation is a very auspicious time, because prior to the initiation we had become deviated from the goal of life and we had somehow or other become entangled by the material energy. But now things are changing because initiation means that the path back to Godhead is wide open and unobstructed, that now we are actually on the straight path back to Godhead. So it is a very glorious moment...

Serving the spiritual master- Part 2

What the spiritual master wants...

And we're in the middle of a very dramatic moment, in the middle of the pure devotee part and with great devotion, we offered him a rose. And he says, "Roses? I don't want roses!"
'God, what's going on you know! I just brought all these roses and he's just rejected the roses!'
And then one has just spent months growing these roses, and one has personally watered these roses with his own tears! These roses, one has watered with the tears of bhakti! These roses, one has sheltered from the rain storm! And then they're offered to Guru Maharaja and then he rejects our offering...! (Dramatic) Heart is broken!

So it's not that we are good servants by serving him with what we think is a good offering but we have to learn from him what a good offering is- again and again. And it may be different from what we may think is good. Sometimes it may not be desirable at all from our personal perspective, but yet that is to be done...

Appreciating The Vaishnavas

We are beginning to appreciate more that we are dependent on so many things. We see that we are not so strong in our Krsna Consciousness.
With time we begin to see that we depend on so many factors for our support.
We begin to value the devotees more because we realise that these are the few people who are also into Krsna Consciousness.
With time one becomes more appreciative of Vaishnava relationships.

It is more than coincidence!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 09/03/2010)
As we are beginning to practice devotional service we gradually begin to notice the presence of Krishna more and more and Krishna is revealing Himself. We begin to see the arrangements of Krishna, even in ordinary daily affairs, and too many times, too many times it is more than coincidence! Too many times we are seeing that: ‘No this can not be coincidence.’
For example we speak about something and later on you open up a book and it’s right there, right on the topic! How many times does it happen. Many of us experience things like that and then you see Krishna...

Serving the spiritual master- Part 1

Adjusting to the desire of the spiritual master

Srila Prabhupada often said that one doesn't require to be a big scholar; one should simply cent per cent surrender to the order of the spiritual master...We have no other choice and therefore we have to deeply meditate on how to become a better servant of the spiritual master. It's not just a matter of doing nice things, trying to do your best- no. Servant means that one has to adjust to the will of the spiritual master. We can have our own idea on 'how I am going to be a good devotee' and we can have our own projection of the role of a good devotee and then we can go play the pure devotee profile. And whatever we've learnt from scripture about the pure devotee, we just try and act it out! And then we think that we are a good disciple! But no, because the spiritual master may want something else for us...

(HH Kadamba Kanana Swami, 2005)

Serve The Vaishnavas And Always Glorify God

‘How can we recognise a Vaishnava and what are his activities?’
And then Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said ‘Vaishnava seva, nirantara Krishna nama sankirtana’
So these are the things to serve the Vaishnava and to always ‘niranatara’ without end chant the holy name of the Lord, Glorify the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So either by chanting the Holy Name or Glorifying the Lord or absorbing our mind in rememebring the Supreme Lord...
So always be absorbed in the Glories of the Personality of Godhead.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 09/03/2010)

The Tortoise Described In The Gita

To not be concerned by the pushing of the mind and the senses and to control this mind and senses - That is the business of a sanyassi. He is simply like the tortoise described in the Gita, he withdraws his limbs, he will not act even if the mind and senses are pushing he will not act. But for devotional service he will extend his limbs and he will act. So he’ll engage the mind in service, he’ll engage the senses in service but otherwise not.

Some Can See The Lord - Some Can Not

Lord Caitanya in Jagganath Puri divided the kirtan and all the devotees into eight different parties and He appointed dancers and different kirtan leaders for each of these parties. But it is said that some could see that Lord Caitanya was Personally dancing in every party and had expanded Himself into 8 forms, but not everyone could see that! Some could see!
So sometimes it appears like that, that not everyone is capable of perceiving the transcendental appearance of the Lord or other mystical feats.

Kadamba Kanana Swami 14/02/2010)

(Maharaja talks about his first trip to Benares)
When I came to Benares I didn’t want to stay in some hotel. Someone invited me to their house and said you can stay at our house no problem. So at night I was sleeping on the roof and everything was fine but at 3am - very loud speakers, at 3am these loud speakers began to play tamboora and mantras. I couldn’t believe it! Coming from the west I was shocked ! 3am in the middle of the night, what is this?!
3 am in the middle of the night -so much noise, the whole town will be awake and everyone was getting up….well no not everyone some were carry on sleeping, I don’t know how slept but they did! Others went to the Ganga. This was my first confrontation with ancient culture of rising early in the morning. the sacred time of bramha muhrta...this is the time when the brahmanans rise. Any ordinary person would think “Oh, three ‘oclock, forget it too early, I’ll sleep three more hours at least, six is also early! Even seven is not bad!”
But no these personalities were performing tapasya. So this is now lost, this is now getting lost very fast. Just somewhere between MTV and Bollywood, this is lost, lost lost lost!

Keep those shooters in the holsters!

(Maharaja talking about disagreements with others)

Sometimes it is a fact that we are too quick on the draw, we are not so deeply rooted in our Vaishnava behaviour.
Modern culture, American culture, Cowboy culture!
Shoot before asking questions! Bang ! Bang !
Guns are still smoking and there’s the corpse!
Then think ' Oh, Why did i do that? Please come back to life!'
It’s then a little difficult!

So keep those slick shooters in the holsters as much as possible

cent percent following the Spiritual Master

When Srila Prabhupada first came to America, he didn't have anything, and somehow or another this movement took off. And Prabhupada said, 'It's a miracle!! How could this have happened? I'm coming to America with a message the Americans weren't waiting for' - no illicit sex, no gambling, no meat, no intoxication - that was not exactly what they were waiting for!!
Prabhupada said: "It's a miracle!!"

He said, " Sometimes I'm thinking, why did this miracle happen to me? Why not to others? I have so many Godbrothers who are very qualified - very learned and very, very qualified Vaishnavas. So I was thinking, why this thing happened to me?
And the only thing I can think of is that I cent percent followed the order of my Spiritual Master"

If we see Krishna then we become fearless!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 01/2010)

Fear is born from the very point that we see things separated from Krishna - as soon as we see anything including ourselves separate from Krishna.

But if see everything in connection to Krishna then we see only Krishna. (Sanskrit) when we see the moving or the non moving entities, whatever we may perceive, we see their forms but actually behind we see Krishna...

Surrender is not a one-time thing. Surrender is all the time - that is surrender. Surrender means that one comes to the point where one goes on surrendering, and not that, well, I surrender and okay, I.ve done it. No!

Your ever well-wisher...

The spiritual master is always our well-wisher...

I saw one of Srila Prabhupada’s very early disciples, who was not exactly dressed in devotional attire. He was there on Prabhupada’s disappearance day in Vrndavan, on the stage. And he was asked to speak. He was dressed in blue jeans, a black t-shirt and a tiger-skinned vest. And his hair was sort of punkish. Still he was one of the earliest devotees in this movement. So he was asked to speak.
He said, “Well, there may be some who are not so happy that I am here on the stage..”
And that might have been true. He said, “But what can I do. I will never leave. I will never go. And the reason is because of three words... three words that Srila Prabhupada wrote to me in a letter in 1966.”

He was building it up, and everybody was saying what are those three words that Srila Prabhupada wrote in the letter. We were all sort of awake... what are those three words in that letter the Prabhupada wrote to him that were so powerful that somehow or other he stayed. What were those words... the magic formula??

Those words were: YOU EVER WELL-WISHER, AC Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada.

Where are my glasses? Where are my keys?

We sometimes get a little forgetful, like:
"Where are my glasses?"
"Where are my keys?"
all the time, "Where is the phone?"
You have to ring the phone to find out where it is !!! These things are going on! Right? So we are forgetful. ...
If we ask
"Yesterday at four o'clock what were you doing?"
“ummm errrr”
Some will remember.
Then we say “The day before at four o'clock what were you doing? ...Tweleve days ago at four o'clock what were you doing?”

“umm errrr how can I know?!”
So we are forgetful very forgetful!

So what about Krishna is He known to be forgetful; does He have a problem with old age? forgetfulness!? NO!
Krishna says to Arjuna : Many births both you and I have passed. I can remember all of them, but you forgot
So Krishna, He does not forget!

Experience The Spiritual Reality Right Here!

Kadamba Kanana Swami

If we look at all the other different spiritual paths, the first basic problem is that the Lord is not visible. And the spiritual world is not visible. One cannot perceive it, and therefore it is necessary for some sort of process to bring about a change of consciousness - some purification, whatever may be - before one can actually perceive His trascendental abode, pastimes, whatever. So different traditions are trying by some process of either meditation, austerity, prayer, in these ways they are trying to bridge that gap - they are trying to get into the other ethereal realm.
But Krsna Consciousness is different. Krsna Consciousness brings the ethereal realm down here! It points out that the ethereal realm is here!....

everyone is getting two chappatis - i should also get!

If one wants to really come to this point of capturing the Supreme Lord then one must capture the heart of the spiritual master...whatever it takes. It’s not so simple. Sixteen rounds may not be enough, he may be pleased but it may not capture him, not conquer him, may not actually conquer his heart.
So if one wants to conquer the Supreme Personality of Godhead then one must do something, something extraordinary. It is difficult because we are always looking at our neighbours!
“Oh he’s got two chappatis, I should also get two chappatis, ahh yeas huh, everyone is getting two chappatis i should also get!”
Like this we are constantly looking at our neighbour.
“ He is only chanting sixteen rounds why I should chant more”

Prabhupada Said God Is Blue

Prabhupada was real, Prabhupada was genuine, Prabhupada loved Krsna, Prabhupada saw Krsna, and because Prabhupada said God is blue, He is blue! It's as simple as that! Therefore Prabhupada is the living proof of Krsna Consciousness!
