Higher Purpose, Higher Taste

Jaydvaita Swami:
I'm not saying you know, somehow or other, if the chocolate tastes good put a rubber band around your tongue or something because you know you just did the wrong thing. No. There's a natural pleasure that comes from, well Bhagavad Gita analyses it by saying the contact with the senses with their objects: that I see something nice, my fingers touch something nice, you hear something nice, contact of the senses, with, an object, of the sense. That results in a certain amount of pleasure. Okay. We don't say deny it, pretend it's not there. But just accept what it is. It's really kinda small time. It's not the ultimate thing that a human being lives for when he's living for the truth,........It's not the be all and end all.
It's just, that's business as usual. Like here you're coming to university, everyday you're eating. Now is this why you have come? Okay, you get a certain amount of satisfaction when you eat maybe the foods good, you're happy about that, But you have a higher purpose here. ..... we're talking about there's a higher taste. When you get the higher thing, automatically you just come, you lose interest in the lower thing. It's not that someone has to drag you away kicking and screaming you just say 'I found something better!'

Ugh, Dirty! Dangerous! Unpleasant! Dreadful! Horrible!

Kadamba Kanana Swami

There was the mother of one devotee and she was from England, and well, she didn't like it very much that her son was a devotee of Krishna. She was very sad that he didn't become a doctor and he instead joined the Hare Krishnas. So she never got over that. Still he was her son, so she decided after many years to pay a visit. And of course he had written her many letters about how nice it was in Vrndavan.
And when she came she said that: 'Is this your Vrndavan? It's dirty! Ugh! There is a pig walking in the street, there’s a big hairy pig! How horrible! Dreadful! Oh, this rickshaw, can we go on, it is dangerous, you know, Oh No! I can't sit on this! It smells here. Oh horrible! And so hot! Oh how unpleasant, and look at the people! ......the donkeys, just look at that poor animal....'
And like this she was just going on and on finding fault after fault after fault: “Is this your river Yamuna! Well I had thought it would be really something else. OH! And the people they don't use toilets they just sit outside like that. This is horrible”

Give them all the mercy!

From the transcendental perspective it is still a miracle, that Lord Krsna put the spiritual world in the material world. That is brilliant! Brilliant! Imagine your son, who you brought up with love and affection, in whom you have invested everything you had goes astray...What will you do? He goes, he leaves home and it goes all wrong. What will you do now? Of course you wish him to come back but he doesn’t want to. At least you want to do something good for him; he’s still your son. You’re thinking of ways that you can do something good for him. Krsna also thought in this way, “How can I do something good, something good for those that have left?” Then He thought, “Why must I only do something good? Why don’t I do everything good?” And he decided, “Why would I give them a little mercy? Why don’t I give them all the mercy?” Krsna thought, “You know what? I won’t just give them a little bit. No, I will put the whole spiritual world in the material world. I’ll give them everything.” Krsna can do such a thing. We know that story, Narada Muni, the cobbler and the proud brahmana. And what is the Lord doing? He’s putting an elephant through the eye of a needle. So if the Lord can put an elephant through the eye of an needle, which in terms of dimensions doesn’t make sense, then why can’t He put the spiritual world into the material world which is also smaller! Same principle, putting something bigger into something smaller. He’s done it before; He did it again...

Simply Chant !!!

Few Quotes On Chanting By Kadamba Kanana Swami:

"Rise early and just Go For It...Chant!!!

"The chanting of Hare Krishna is so powerful"

"One should chant just so that: It is pleasing to Krishna"

"For the devotee who really tries to sincerely chant....
and to keep his eyes of that television of the mind, one day when he looks on that television: Krishna will be there!"

"This chanting is the actual means in which one can see Krishna"

"When it comes to chanting Hare Krishna...so hard to fix the mind. Automatically with time in devotional service our relationship with the Holy Name changes"

The Beast Still Inside Wants To Break Lose!

Kadamba Kanana Swami
The Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde principle is indeed there. Even while we are walking around with folded hands looking very devotional, there's the beast still inside and wants to break lose! But we hide him as if he's not there!
Even the man who puts his tie and goes to work and looks very civilised, underneath that tie there is also a beast, haha! And he is just waiting for the opportunity, close the curtains. Haha! Here I am! Like that right? I know the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde principle very well! What to do?

So, even as devotees, we have this lower nature in us also, and we have to control it..... Everyone has to control it but to some extent. The man with the tie is also controlling, he's only letting it out with his secretary, not with everyone!
But we, devotees must actually control this lower nature of ourselves permanently.

Combine East and West - Perfect combination

It is said that the culture of the east, is compared to the lame. The culture of the west is compared to the blind because it is acting blindly without understanding the deeper goal of life.
So Prabhupada said if the two combine, east and west and take the best of both, then we can get a perfect combination. When the blind takes the lame on his back, and then the lame will tell the blind....then it works. So with this ability of the west, to get things done, the extrovert nature, combined with the introvert introspective nature, the introvert introspective nature can give the vision.
The expert can in a very expert way realise all these things, wonderful things can be done. And by this combination in Mayapur there will be a Mandir, a wonderful temple. The biggest temple in the world, by this combination.

MAGICAL INDIA (part7 - the last part)

Kadamba Kanana Swami

So I went down the mountain, and then, I decided to go to Vrndavan!
Vrndavan is another place! Vrndavan is very nice. Vrndavan is the place of Krishna. So, Vrindavan did it for me, somehow or other. I didn't know anything about Vrndavan, but I came to Vrndavan and it was quite interesting because I walked in Vrndavan, at the end of the afternoon, and I was walking into to the town and as I was walking into the town, I wasn't walking alone.... There were about a 100 cows also walking into the town!

Govardhana Puja 2009!

Govardhana Puja with HH Kadamba Kanana Swami in Leipzig, Germany! Here's a slideshow of the ecstatic festival...

"Of all the devotees, this Govardhana Hill is the best! O my friends, this hill supplies Krsna and Balaräma, along with Their calves, cows and cowherd friends, with all kinds of necessities—water for drinking, very soft grass, caves, fruits, flowers and vegetables. In this way the hill offers respects to the Lord. Being touched by the lotus feet of Krsna and Balarama, Govardhana Hill appears very jubilant." (Bhag.10.21.18)

So I thought let me go on, let me go to the Himalayas. The Himalayas! Everyone knows it, these are not ordinary mountains, right?! The highest mountains in the world! Very spiritual mountains, and it is quite amazing! You come to the Himalayas and there's so many temples so many rivers are cascading down hills, palm trees, it's quite amazing. Anyway, I had heard about the Tibetan Buddhists and I thought let me go there. So I went there and I visited the
Dalai Lama, and all the Tibetans up there.

But the thing about them, was that, it was hard to get through to them. They had these, prayer mills, in the middle of their town which are like, cylindrical things on an axle about this high, round like this and there's handles on and you can pull them and they spin around. And they had like ten in one direction and then ten on the other side and people were walking by pushing those things and they were all spinning. There they are they are spinning and it counts as a prayer.

MAGICAL INDIA (part5)

Kadamba Kanana Swami

So anyhow, that's how my first journey began and there were many many other things that I experienced and I could and tell the travel story for quite a while, you know, because once you start talking about travels, then you never stop! I will tell maybe one more thing..........
I decided since I was there, that I should do some meditation. So, you know, I had practised at home. I can't do it any more I'm getting old! But anyway, legs were all in the lotus position and I was ready to go! So I sat down at the east side of the Ganga, the holy river. So spiritual, so full of power and potency, and getting ready for the experience! I sat down on the Earth: 'Wow. Above me was the sky 'WOW!' In front of me was water!’ (crowd laughter )
'Wow' and on the other side was fire. So spiritual! So I sat down and was in deep meditation until I was going deeper and deeper and deeper into my meditation and I heard a
buzzing sound in my ear: 'Bzzzzzzzz!' 'Bzzzzzzzzz!'
The mosquitos were attacking me by the thousands!!!

MAGICAL INDIA (part4)

Kadamba Kanana Swami

(Travelling on the train In India)
Then opposite me there were a husband and wife. And I tell you, I'd never seen a wife in such a service attitude to her husband. I was shocked! I was just shocked, I wasn't used to that ,you know, I was more used to the European system of 'Darling!' 'Yes Dear!'
But here, she was very submissive and very much taking care of Him, everything! I mean she was arranging his lunch. And he seemed, he wasn't like a podgy fed ugly man. No, he looked very noble and very pious. He seemed like a very nice man. And when I looked at these people I thought 'These people have noble qualities...' I could see it, they had noble qualities. They were honest people. I could see that.

"Do you Want To get Old?" No! "Diseased?" No! "Dead?" No!

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

We're all connected. we all belong to....we're all parts of the Supreme. And now we're acting as if we're disconnected, and that disconnectedness is causing us untold difficulties.

What is that difficulty? No one wants to get old, we're all going get old. Some of us are already well into it, some of us are so far away, but everyone has to get old but no one wants to. Everyone has to get diseased and no one wants it. No one wants to die, and everyone's forced to. And birth also is something that we have to accept. Without argument. And that's also painful. These are all, unnatural for us, therefore we don't like them.

If you asked me 'Do I want to get old?'
“No I don't want to get old!”

'Diseased?'
“No!”

“Dead?'
“No”

Why not?

MAGICAL INDIA (part3)

Kadamba Kanana Swami

He ( The customs officer in India) said: 'You have to go to Benares. That is a very spiritual place, the river Ganga is there so you must go there!'.
So I thought okay, whatever he says you know, he seems to know what he's talking about so I said 'All right! I'll um, I'll do that!'
He said 'Okay, I'll meet you this evening at 6 o'clock and when I'm free from duty I'll arrange the train for you don't worry. Don't worry, I'll take care! Don't worry!”

While you are young ....Go For It!

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

There's an interesting history in one of the Puranas about a child named Prahlada. He was spiritually advanced from his childhood. He met a great sage and became an enlightened little boy.
He was trying to get his friends on board, saying: 'Come on! Let's do something! Let's chant Hare Krishna, let's hear something about spiritual advancement.'
The kids said: 'Come on! You know we’re five years old, let us play. And when later in old age you know, when we're grandparents we will do this stuff.'

He said: 'You better do it now!'

MAGICAL INDIA (part2)

Kadamba Kanana Swami

The gundas or the criminals are praying, the priests are playing everyone believes in God that is the amazing thing. And that was exactly what my experience was the first time I came to India almost thirty years ago. So thirty years ago it was a lot different than now and I had jumped on a bus from Amsterdam called the magic bus, it wasn't that magic, I can tell you that! But anyway! It was cheap! It was a long bumpy ride three weeks, day and night you know, oh boy!

19 October 2009

MAGICAL INDIA (part1)

Kadamba Kanana Swami:

Holland....which is where I'm originally from. Although I left that country really, a long time ago, twenty nine years ago exactly. I went to India. Yeah to me India was a country which was much more interesting than a boring place like Holland with, windmills and dykes and lots of wind and lots of rain.

The story of Kokilavana...

So a few years ago, I went to Vrndavana during the month of Kartika and it happened to be so that just as I was there, Deena Bandhu was not well. So Deena Bandhu is Mr Parikrama and all these parikramas were booked and many people were registered for them and they had no one to go. So I became Deena Bandhu! For 3 days I was Deena Bandhu! And now dear devotees, we're going to this place where they have finger burning hot halava in the winter and really cooling melons in the summer! We're going to the place where Krsna, where Krsna resided for a long time. So I went to many fun places and one of these places, as we approached it, it was absolutely effulgent! The effulgence seemed to just come up from the earth; I could see that there was just light emanating from this place- it was not of this earth! Then we came to that place...Kokilavana. Kokilavana is that famous place (I'm trying to make it even more famous!) where Srimati Radharani lived in Yavat- that is the place where She lived in the house of her in-laws...

So Radharani had to live there with Jatila (Radharani's mother-in-law) and Kutila (Radharani's sister-in-law)....a very difficult situation! They were just..."where are you going? what are you doing? your duty is this...your duty is that...."One day, in the forest- not too far away- there was amazing singing of the kokilas- kokilas are the cuckoos. These kokilas, they were singing in such a way that everyone was just amazed! They never heard the birds sing like that! Everyone was just listening! And it's said that at that time, even Jatila was completely charmed, and she told Radharani and Her girlfriends that they should go there and listen to thes kokilas, "are you hearing it? You girls should go there and hear the singing of these cuckoos."

So we went there to that place. And on the way, we walked from Yavat to Kokila and had a harinam and it was getting more and more ecstatic on the way. And by the time we came there to this Kokilavana, there's a temple there and we had an ecstatic kirtan there. And then we got into this tune, and this tune stayed with us for a long time. Even when we went back on the bus, for one and half hours we sang this tune non-stop! And we came back to the temple and we were still singing this tune! And therefore I am now bringing Kokilavana to you....!

One Will Be Betrayed By The Material Energy

(Kadamba Kanana 02/05/2002)

The material energy is such that it relentlessly attacks everyone.
I just got a letter and someone was in Kanpur on the railway station and it was the day after Ramanavami and suddenly he had a little dizzy spell, in a moment he was in hospital , a cut on the head , fainted, bleeding, concussion and all that....it happens!
This is the way the material nature strikes. We go for a drive and wind up two months in a cast, with a big leg in plaster, so no one expects it but it happens and then there is nothing that we can say. So we are pushed by the material nature like a boat on the waves, like a little straw in the wind. ......The straw in the street is just blown by the wind. So we are being blown by the wind in this world! The material nature pushes us....

Highest Point Of Service

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

I don't mean to say that everybody's just a shameless hedonist. You know that as soon as we pile out of this room we're all going to be going looking for the nearest club and doing whatever it is that, turns our senses on. I don't mean to say that. Some of us get our, our pleasure from doing some altruistic work. Some of us from doing some political work, some of us from doing some, all sorts of things……Generally: we don't work however unless we're paid. As much as I say I love my work, if you don't pay me I won't be there Monday morning.

18 October 2009

The Material World Is Constitutionally Unrewarding

We're trying to enthuse material things with joy. You know we talk it up and say, this is the best!! You know... Party!!! or the best club! Or the best, whatever it is! And we talk it up and kind of psych ourselves into “This is really going to be something!'
But at the end it's really not, what it's talked up to be. Therefore we are disappointed. We're disappointed. The material world is constitutionally like that.
We're thinking it's just that we can configure it, 'I got the configuration wrong', you know, 'I got the girl with the blue eyes instead of the brown eyes.'
You know 'I'm not the kind of person who's meant to be with blue eyed girls' and you know just the 'whole thing is wrong, and you know if it were only Suzy instead of Jane, everything would be different!'
But it's not like that.
Configure it this way, configure it that way, configure it a third way, any way you configure it the material world is constitutionally unrewarding!

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

Little Crumbs Of Happiness

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

AUDIENCE: If within the material world you, it makes you happy to go a club and dance for a few hours, why is that wrong?

JAYADVAITA SWAMI: What's wrong? Well, here's the problem! That, first of all, the Bhagavad Gita says (Sanskrit), okay, what is this happiness. First thing is that the happiness is not really happiness. What do I mean now? I go to a club, I dance, first of all I'm out of how many pounds, it cost me something, second of all okay I have to go there and drink, that means I've clouded up my mind is that really something that is in my best interests? To cloud up my mind? And then I meet people and I engage with them in some sort of interactions, when their minds are cloudy and my minds are cloudy? My mind is cloudy? Where does that go?

AUDIENCE: Who says that drinking and dancing within a club go together?

Lord Ramacandra...

Kadamba Kanana Swami did a brilliant presentation of the Ramayana at the South Coast in Durban- 09 October 2009. Let us enter the pastimes of Lord Ramacandra...

Let us this evening enter into a meditation. Our meditation is on especially Lord Ramacandra, who appeared one million years ago and yet is still such a prominent personality that no one forgets. I remember I was in India during the years that the televsion series on the Ramayana was becoming very popuar. At that that time people in India just bought televisions to see the Ramayana! And every week there was an episode of the Ramayana and the whole country would just stop! On the railways, people would just pull the emergency breaks, got off the train, found a village, found a television and sat down to watch the Ramayana. And if in some village, during the Ramayana the electricity would go out, then the villagers, they marched on the power houses and burnt it down! The Ramayana had to be seen...it was not just a television series, it was just a whole nation that was virtually entering so deeply into the Ramayana. It was not a movie, it was as if the spirtual reality became visualised before the eyes of the people...

Here is a short clip of Kadamba Kanana Swami singing, "Raghupati Raghava Raja Rama..."

G O U R A N G A !!! Share Krishna Consciousness to the world!

(Kadamba Kanana 10/04/2008)

This movement will spread from person to Person, it may spread in different ways. Some are spreading it through the internet. We know that those devotees in Scotland had a hacking programme! A programme of hacking into computers and sending messages in there: “CALL OUT GOURANGA!”
I heard a few years ago, I heard a report on it that they had sent out like three hundred million messages already!
They sent “CALL OUT GOURANGA!” on three hundred million computers! That is serious, that is a lot, that is impressive! When I heard the numbers I was like “Phewww! That is quite something!” If you think about three hundred million people are getting “CALL OUT GOURANGA!” on their screen, that really is quite something!

So there may be so many techniques quantity or quality whatever they may be. Someone may reach out to three hundred million with a message on a computer, someone else may just go for one person and go in depth. Whatever it may be.... you may share something with a friend, doesn’t matter but how can we avoid it.

Capturing More And More People

Srila Prabhupada, he is still bringing people, still capturing more and more people. This movement has not reached it’s full momentum yet. It is just sort of starting. It is like Prabhupada has pushed something which is now rolling down the mountain and catching more and more speed and taking more and more along in it’s course. This is the nature of this movement, it has not reached full strength as yet, rather something has been set in motion.

If I may compare it to fire for a moment, then we say that this movement is sparking the interest of many many people and sparks of something in their heart. Some of these sparks that are lighting up they will be extinguished, but still it may spark up again later. But some sparks are not going to be extinguished anymore and are catching full fire to the point where one is being commited, where one says “ Oh alright Ok Krishna I will be yours then I guess!”
So where we begin to surrender to Krishna, where we begin to consciously give our life to Krishna, that happens. From there on more will spread, such people they become automatically themselves torches of that same fire and they will set others on fire!

(Kadamba Kanana 10/04/2008)

Activities With Spiritual Purpose

It doesn't mean that all I do is sit and chant and meditate, and I don't eat, I don't talk to anyone, I don't work, I don't function, I enter into some sort of o-zone and I'm never seen again.
It's practical. I realise my relationship with the Supreme or with Krishna, and in that relationship I see everything else.
If I'm married I see, that marriage means that, there's two of us, for spiritual advancement. It's not just a mutual sense gratification society of two. But it has now a spiritual connection, and if there's children then there's more people to make spiritual progress. If there's something I'm doing in the world, suppose I was making some money the money can be used in Krishna's service. If I have a microphone I could use it........ Anything! So it doesn't mean dropping activities because activity is illusion. But it means infusing all of our activities with spiritual purpose!

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

16 October 2009

Buy a bigger alarm clock!

How to chant 16 rounds? Well, do the impossible! But the answer is...buy a bigger alarm clock! One of those monster ones and put it on the other side of the room! One of those nasty ones that sounds like a factory horn (makes sound)- really annoying sound! Sambanda (making the connection) takes courage and determination to somehow or other do it, do it all together- rise early and just go for it...chant!!!
(HH KKSwami, 10 Oct '09, Durban, SA)

Attachment To The Lotus Feet Of Krishna

HARE KRSNA
HARE KRSNA
KRSNA KRSNA
HARE HARE
HARE RAMA
HARE RAMA
RAMA RAMA
HARE HARE

The true criteria for understanding the Lord is attachment to His Lotus Feet, because the Lord will reveal Himself. So one can not satisfy the Lord with the blunt material senses, one can not in any way approach the Lord with just the intellect....but when the Lord is pleased by devotional service performed in attachment to the Lotus Feet of Krishna then He will reveal Himself......
Attachment to the Lotus Feet of Krishna changes our whole perspective in life because as we get attached to the lotus feet of Krishna then we gradually lose our self interest as to: my likes, my dislikes, my desires to somehow or other doing what is important for Krishna, what is really serving His purpose and in this way our life becomes a life of sacrifice for Krishna. That will bring us close to Krishna. Then Krishna will reveal to us how to understand Him. Krishna says: “I will give you the intelligence so that you can come to me” and ultimately that is the process.

(Kadamba Kanana 12/03/2007)

“Temporarily Mine” means it's not actually mine!

AUDIENCE: ... you bought it with your money, so it is your property isn't it?

JAYADVAITA SWAMI: Really? You know I buy a car with my money and then it's my car? Then someone else buys it from me then it's his car, then it goes to the next person then it's his car. So temporarily you can say it's mine, but “temporarily mine” means it's not actually mine. It only means it's in my hands for some time. Like I say “My money, I have £5 this is my mine,” But five minutes ago it was not mine and when I spend it again it's not mine. So my claim “This is my money,” is not a substantial claim. And even while it's in my hands it's not mine. It's not actually my property. In the Bhagavad Gita we hear from Krishna that: “It's My property!' Krishna says: “Whatever there is, is my energy.”
As the sunlight is the energy of the sun, everything is ultimately the energy of the Supreme.

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

Put on your jogging shoes...!

One round will not do! No, not good enough! 4 rounds is not good enough! You can do it for a short time- that's all right. 8 is nice for beginners...but how long are you going to be a beginner? It's time...put on your jogging shoes and go for it- chant 16 rounds!!!

(HH KKSwami, 10 October '09, Durban, SA)

Three Features Of The Lord

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

IMMENSE VARIETY
Prabhupada had very definite teachings to give that were also contrary to what was going around. What was generally going around is that when we talk about Supreme or an Absolute or an Ultimate Truth we mean something which is ultimately beyond form, beyond names, beyond qualities, beyond description, beyond thinking, beyond anything. Something essentially impersonal and homogeneous. That was the one, the great light, the unspeakable truth, that's the general discourse. And he challenged that. His essential challenge was that in the world around you, you have variety. Here we have black people, we have white people, we have tan people, we have tall people, we have short people, we have fat ones, and thin ones, and middle sized ones, we have very smart people, we have very stupid people, sorry to say but it's true we have, all sorts of varieties! We have yellow, we have green......, name a variety we have it. Now by what process does this immense variety precede from something which has no form, no qualities, by definition no variety whatsoever.............. If that 'It' has no variety, no differentiation, no anything there, where do you get variety here? Hm? If it's not in the warehouse how did it get to the shop!?

14 October 2009

Hold on to your seats...

Kadamba Kanana Swami takes us to Vrndavana at a home program in Westville, Durban- 06 October 2009...

This evening we are going to Vrndavana- there is no doubt about it- because that is the nature of the mind. If I say, 'America!'- you already see the statue of liberty. If I say, 'Paris!'- Eiffel tower! 'Pisa!'...like that. With the speed of mind we can travel very fast, you know- Japan...! So, different places in the world have a different mood and very easy we can go there with the speed of mind. So it is not just that we are talking about Vrndavana; we're actually going there...!

So this evening, it's not a program to sort of have a nice little satsang, a nice little entertaining evening and a few stories about Krsna- that's not the idea. No, actually let's go, let's actually enter into the dhama, enter into Vrndavana...!!!

Human Being Acts Like Any Damn Thing

(Jayadvaita Swami 10/2007)

AUDIENCE: I just wondered for example for a mosquito, if in their life, they was like injecting malaria into people, and like, causing loads of suffering to the whole conscious or something. How would that mosquito get further up the scale of consciousness, and eventually, go back to Godhead?

JAYADVAITA SWAMI: Okay that's a good question. For the lower creatures, they are always acting exactly as they are supposed to do. It's the business of the mosquito to suck your blood and give you malaria sometimes. That's what mosquito's do. You never see mosquito's, stealing oranges or something like that. The mosquito acts always exactly like a mosquito. The cow acts exactly like a cow. The birds exactly like a bird. And the human being like any damn thing!!! He acts like a dog, like a mosquito, blood sucking tax men!!!

Real fulfillment...

Kadamba Kanana Swami at a Uni night pogram in Durban, SA- 05 October 2009

If you take that material thing and connect it to an eternal purpose then it is really fulfillment. Otherwise I'm happy today and depressed tomorrow. Is that fulfillment? No, fulfillment must last, it must stay. Fulfillment means, fulfilled today, fulfilled tomorrow...something that stays. Otherwise, you fall in love, you find a person and the qualities of that person are like an ocean. After one week you've walked around the ocean and found out it's just a little pond and you would'nt care to ever see it again! Falling in love and falling out of love...

Runs On Ecstasy!!!

GRASS IS FOR COWS
Spiritual life does not mean that we do not live in this world. Krishna consciousness is not the type of renunctiation to enter into a cave. My favourite example is Meella Repa, a Tibetan ascetic who lived in the medieval times and spent his whole life eating grass soup. I once read his biography and in the biography I read that due to eating the grass soup he turned green! Which kind of convinced me that he was not a role model! I was considering: “All good and well but grass is for cows that is quite clear!” I figured that out!

Going before the Name...

From Japa Talks today, 12 Oct:
Kadamba Kanana Swami:
While chanting my Kartika rounds, I went before Krsna in the form of His name. What am I bringing Him as an offering? All I have is the state of my heart. What am I bringing Him? My frustrations of the material world? No, I can not bother Krsna with such things, better I let go and simply go before Him and beg Him to allow me to do some service.... hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare.....

Without self-discipline there is no spiritual progress

AUDIENCE: Can you say a little more about Prabhupada and the 60's? Can you say a little more? Was he an American or an Indian...?

JAYADAVAITA SWAMI:
Yes I can say a little more about him thank you. No he was not American he was from India from West Bengal, to be precise from Calcutta, to be more precise. And his teachings were quite different from what was being popularly taught. At the time America, mid 1960's was full of gurus, full of swamis, full of, all sorts of spiritual things. There was um, right around that time was the hey-day of, chant, a secret mantra 15 minutes in the morning and then 15 minutes in the evening and then pay $25 and you meditate. There were all sorts of things. Spiritual and the general trend of it was a sort of what we might now call a new-age discourse, we talk about the oneness of all beings, we talk about finding yourself in the flow of greater reality you know we find this kind of vague, everything was kind of 'be one with everything else!' and, 'whatever you are doing it's the same as everything else' because really we think it's everything and everything is nothing so nothing is everything you know, it goes on (CROWD LAUGHS).

Experience the presence of Krishna

AUDIENCE: So if I wanted to become Hare Krishna, what would I have to do? What kind of, you said do not do intoxicating myself and what else did I have to do?

JAYADVAITA SWAMI: Positively, we recommend this chanting. Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. It's a transcendental vibration, we don't charge for it, it's not a secret. But if, when you chant, you'll experience purification in part. Not that cash in and in five minutes my heart is just been through the laundry, but you go on chanting and you'll experience how your heart becomes, free from anxieties, free from so much many misconceptions, joyful, because you are coming in touch with Krishna.

Even My Body Is On Loan

AUDIENCE: What does it mean to you to be a monk and to renounce everything material?

JAYADVAITA SWAMI: What does it mean to be a monk and to renounce everything material? What does it mean to renounce it? You probably saw that I sat down and put this thing which must cost at least 50 or 80 pounds over here, and it looks very material. It's made of material stuff, it costs material money, so how am I renounced everything material? Our understanding is that first of all nothing actually belongs to us. This is not my property. The elements of which it's fashioned were here before I came. When I leave the scene they'll still be here. For some time I say this is mine, this is my recorder, this is my house, this is my money, this is my family, this is my this, this is my that, my country. But it's here before I come, it's here after I go, so in what sense is it mine? It's not mine actually, there's a higher proprietor to whom it belongs, and I'm borrowing this stuff.
Even my body is on loan. The stuff of which the body is made is not actually my property. I can't command it actually, and be thoroughly in charge of it. It's on loan. Just as your apartment is on loan. So renunciation means not that I give something up because it's not mine to begin with. But it means that I recognise the actual proprietor, and I use it for that Supreme Proprietor of everything.

KKS VID - Kirtan in Sydney's Govinda Valley

Govinda Valley is a yoga health retreat centre in a picturesque valley near Sydney. Kadamba Kanana Swami visited there recently where he lead a soft kirtan after an inspiring class. But it did not take him a long time to get into the swing of things, and the kirtan began to fly. The video captures some of the ecstasy we felt.

Kartik- for the busy people...

In 1986, I was very busy because I was in charge of the construction of Srila Prabhupada’s Samadhi in Mayapur. And there was no limit- no limit- in what had to be arranged for that building. One day I looked at that Samadhi and it looked just like a huge face with a big mouth and the mouth just said, ‘Aniyor! Aniyor! Aniyor! Bring me more! Bring me more!’ And I brought trucks of cement and steel and bricks and stone and marble, and I brought engineers and draughts men and drawings and technical experts and labors and I broke labor strikes to bring more work and I had to deal with endless things and I was chanting my rounds during mangal arati because I had to start working at six and in the evening I was so tired that I couldn’t chant anymore and I would just crash…and I was just so totally busy!!! And in the middle of that, one day Lokanatha Maharaja appears in 1986! At that time Lokanatha Maharaja had the padayatra. And the padayatra had a mad elephant! This elephant was heavy; it had picked up people and had thrown them about! And there was a camel that would bite people! And then there were many villagers from India, and all these villagers, (imitates) ‘ha ha ha’- many of them! And then they had so many dioramas and exhibitions and tractors and everything! And Lokanatha Maharaja came to me and said, “I want you to look after the padayatra when we come to Mayapur.” I said, “Maharaja, Maharaja, Maharaja, please Maharaja, have mercy! Maharaja, I am so busy, Maharaja, I am so busy that it’s…Maharaja, I, I have hardly time to chant my rounds! One more straw Maharaja, it will break the camel’s back…” I thought finished, you know- got rid of Lokanatha Maharaja! And then he starts and he said, “You know, in my village, they say that if you want to get something done, you go to a busy man.” He said, “because a man who is not busy, is a lazy man. So if you go to him he won’t do anything! But a busy man is by nature very active- he may be busy and he may not be able to do so much but at least he’ll do something! So if you want something done you go to a busy man!” What could I say after that! Defeated by village logic! It’s like totally practical!
So there I was and I had a camel that was biting all the time and I had to really watch out for this camel! And then I kept a safe distance from the elephant! And then all the villagers, (imitates) “ah, there is no water, pani nahi he, pani nahi he!” and “we are hungry” you know, and “we want drinks, we want maha prasadam!” God they wanted everything! And I was like the father of the padayatra! And that’s how they saw me! They wanted pocket money- they wanted everything! They wanted to pick my pockets! It was too much!

So this story is there for all of you because I know you are all busy people. And I know that since you are all very busy, you all have no time. Yes, and I would have sympathized with you….until I met Lokanatha Maharaja! And he just totally smashed my illusion and made it completely clear that yes, sorry, if you are busy, you are the right person! You’re the right person to do something extra! Something extra- may be not a big thing but at least something, because busy people are by nature active. So yes, you are the right people for Kartik! Kartik is made for you, for you busy people- too busy people! Yes- many busy people! For all of you busy people, there is this month of Kartik to become a little more busy! Hmmm….very nice! So in this way we can all be busy in the service of Krsna and do something special...

The Instructions Of The Spiritual Master

Srila Prabhupada didn't see his spiritual master that often but he took his instructions very seriously... because the instructions of the spiritual master are more important than his personal prescence.

See Krishna Behind It All

(House Programme 2006)
It is midsummer, it is nice, summer is nice, it is very nice and this little house is nice and this water is nice, everything is very nice and that is ok. We can actually appreciate it that we are in a nice place, it is not maya.
It is not that we have to go like: “Take this lake away! It is from the devil !!! It’s dangerous, OH NO!! A little boat on the Lake!! It reminds me of sense gratification !!!! Krishna Krishna Krishna !!”

Not like that. We can actually appreciate the lake, but not just the lake, not just the boat, but Krishna behind it. So in this way the beauty of the material world may remind us more. It is true that when Lord Chaitanya saw the ocean in Puri He thought it was Yamuna. When Lord Chaitanya saw a hill He thought it was Govardhana...but not artificial, He really thought it was Govardhana, and He really thought it was Yamuna... so we can not imitate that, but even if it reminds us a little bit about Yamuna, that’s nice.

We may remember the pastimes of Krishna or may just see the energies of Krishna and we may appreciate how the energies of Krishna are also helping us to come to Krishna. As it is says in Bhagavatam, that the beauty of this world is the smile of Krishna. I like that very much. That is very important to me because otherwise it means I have to live somewhere in a cave, far ways from the world and lock myself away from the world!

If the beauty of this world is all just the witchcraft of maya then I’m in trouble! Then I am in big trouble because then I have to constantly run away from this world and hide from it....but if I can see that the beauty in this world is Krishna then I can actually be here and be natural because it is nice to be in a place like this. But if I see all the beauty as the witchcraft of maya, I have to make crosses, block it out so i don’t see it, don’t remember it and dream about it tonight!!!

But now I can. If in my dream there is just the lake and no Krishna I will not worry because i know that the lake is coming from Krishna. So in that way I see Krishna. So in the work of Krishna we also see Krishna, in the energy of Krishna we see Krishna. ...........we have to realise that this is Krishna, this is Krishna’s creation, Krishna’s plan, Krishna’s arrangement, it is amazing to see that Krishna made all these things.
