Getting excited about 22 Guys Running after A Ball!

I was the other day remembering in a lecture how in the Vedic times the kings would perform very great yajna and sacrifices. Maharaja Yudhistira performed the (Sanskrit) sacrifice. And it was a big thing. Big. There was a big arena which was made with (Sanskrit) for people to sit, so they could watch the whole thing, and all kinds of amazing rituals were being performed. There was a wealth there, an incredible wealth. So much gold and jewellery and someone was being brought for the sacrifice and not only that, afterwards it was also, some of it was being distributed to the to those who were there. So there was a good reason to go to a sacrifice also! There were the sacrifices, they were big events and they attracted the attention of the whole world. Now that has been replaced for a football match!
.........So, like this we are, we are seeing that in modern times our intelligence is becoming smaller and smaller. And we are getting all excited about 22 guys running after a ball right? And people die, you know they die they get a heart attack over like the goal “Oh noooooooooooo!”. It's like we're losing “aaaah!”, and every football match some people give up their lives. They've literally given their lives for football. And Prabhupada said that: “Actually, we should understand that when we look at a game of football, we should understand the position of the game” He said: “We are not the player, we are the ball! We can be kicked out any moment.”

Krishna Maintains His Devotees

Krishna gives devotees intelligence and therefore we need to take shelter of those devotees that have taken shelter of Krishna. Then we also we become more and more ourselves become devotees of Krishna. So, after those twenty four years in the grhastha ashram, Nimai Pandit took sanyassa. His wife was only 16 years old. She was daily chanting, she was chanting her rounds and after she finished one round, she would take a grain of rice and put it in a bowl and as she would chant another round, that's finished another grain on rice and as many rounds as she chanted that's how many grains of rice she would eat for that day! She was probably, you would say she was on the skinny side right?! (crowd laughter!) By the mercy of the Lord she wasn't! Krishna also maintains His devotees.

Because devotees are not just maintaining on rice they also maintain on prema and their love for Krishna, and Krishna simply by His mercy also maintains,...through somehow or other she was maintained. She was so transcendental. Her spiritual life was not like, and now I'm only going to eat a few grains of rice today (crowd laughter!) because I'm very austere devotee, we are fasting and we are taking great pleasure in fasting, only dried rice in very small quantities, no thank you, no dal with my rice. Is it, is it dry enough? Take this rice back it's too wet, not exactly like that rather, these, these kind of devotees are so absorbed in love of God. These bodily things are .... they are not in the forefront of their mind.

This is what happens gradually. That, it is said that if one has a million Euros, then one stops worrying about 5 Euro problems, if you have, then 5 Euro problem is not so much of a big thing any more. In our present economy of course 5 Euros means a lot right? But if we have millions right? Then what's 5 Euros? In the same way when we have Krishna and when we have deep love for Krishna................ who is attracted for love for the material things? What does it mean love for money? Love for football? Love for, you know, anything in this material world.....it has no more meaning! It is all, all gone. But because we have forgotten Krishna, therefore all these things became very big.

"We should get into spreading this Krishna consciousness, being part of it, being part of the movement and therefore cooperate with each other"

We Are So Convinced We Are Very Educated

Superior Intelligence
Srila Prabhupada's angle on the mortality rate was always different. Because someone said in an interview, he said “Well in India, the problem with India is that the mortality rate is so high in India”
Then Prabhupad said “Mortality rate high here? As far as I'm concerned it's the same everywhere. Hundred Percent!” (crowd laughter!)
Prabhupada was brilliant, we were ever so lucky, Brilliant. The devotees become brilliant because they get the intelligence from Krishna. They get intelligence from Krishna, and that is why we have to take shelter of the devotees, because they have superior intelligence, because they have purified intelligence.

Prabhupada Could See Crystal Clear
It is said when we become attached in the material world to enjoying the material energy then the intelligence becomes smaller and smaller and smaller. It begins to go around in a circle. From the car to the wife, to the house to the money to the gadgets - just thinking like that - only about these things and in this way gradually the range of the intelligence shrinks ...becomes smaller and smaller. But as one surrenders to Krishna, Krishna supplies the intelligence and (sanskrit) develops broader intelligence.
So Srila Prabhupada has extraordinary intelligence, that he could see what no one could see. We could on for 100 years.... the mortality rate is higher in India than in Europe ..we could never have questioned to think, but then Prabhupada said "100%" yes immediately realised, it's true. It's totally true. And nobody could see it. Nobody could see it, but it is as clear as glass, crystal clear, everybody "it's 100%,definitely."

We Are Convinced We Are Intelligent
So,this is so interesting how we can be so convinced that we are very intelligent, we are so convinced we are very educated, we are refined in our intelligence. we are able to philosophise and very deeply find points after all we are not primitive people...We are from Holland and Germany and various other countries and we are highly advanced culturally speaking. And then a simple little thing: 100% mortality rate, we never thought about it!!!

Plonk ! Boiiing! There You go Krishna!

Krishna says: Offer to me a fruit, a flower, a leaf some water. But then you have to learn how to offer.
It's not that: "Okay we offer Krishna a fruit, a flower, a leaf, some water"
"Alright a fruit, some flower, leaf and water it will be" - pick a full cabbage throw it around the plate, plonk boiiiing "There you go, that's what Krishna wants!"

By Serving The Vaishnava's One Can Attain To Krishna

Not At All Ordinary Personalities
It is said in Jagannath Puri, if one has transcendental vision one sees these people of Jagannath Puri walking around in the streets, (they are looking like, well most people in India, some are smoking bidis, a national pastime, bidi bidi bidi, they are smoking bidi and so many other things and yet! In spite of all that) those with transcendental vision can see that they all have four arms, they can see that they all have four arms! Actually, you can see it ...all the residents of Puri all have four arms. So one with transcendental vision can see that the pilgrims that come to Radhadesh are not at all ordinary personalities but are highly effulgent and transcendental sages! We don't know what they have been in previous lives, and maybe, brahmanas, brahmanas who have studied Vedic scriptures three times, full study, maybe, maybe possible in a last life, then this life somehow or other some birth somewhere on the planet and then here, suddenly here.... but now following the Sankirtan movement of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu!

The Vaishnava Is The Servant Of Krishna
So this is the first point I want to make is the extraordinary potency of this movement that the people that we are dealing with are not at all ordinary people. We never know who a Vaishnava is. But a Vaishnava is never an ordinary person. Not because of the service he has done in this life, but even everything he has done in his previous life. Here we are dealing with someone who has pleased Krishna over many lives: Over many lifetimes. And these are the Vaishnava's! ............... The Vaishnava is the servant of Krishna, and Krishna has accepted him as such and therefore the blessing of Krishna are one with him, and by serving the Vaishnava's one can attain to Krishna. The quality that attracts Krishna the most is humility.

Lord Chaitanya Served The Vaishnavas
When Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Nimai Pandit was a scholar He was very proud. Very proud! He was so learned no one could defeat him, He would challenge everyone and try to get them to be before Him then smashed them. Then Nimai went to Gaya and performed that sradha ceremony, met His spiritual master and when He came back after meeting His spiritual master, Nimai became a devotee, He became so humble! He was so humble! He began to serve all the Vaishnavas. And the Vaishnavas, because, He was serving them, they blessed Him. We bless Nimai that He may also become a Vaishnava! We bless Him that His devotion to the Lord will become fixed. In this way, it is through the devotees that we get devotional service, you see. Devotees they are living devotional service.

You Can't Just Do your Own Thing
Alone you cannot serve Krishna. You cannot manufacture your own, your own system to serve. Imagine someone, you have an office and you hire an office assistant, and instead of doing what you want to do he tries to help you by what he wants to do. Then, he'll drive you crazy!!! He'll drive you absolutely mad right? I mean just try to learn, try to learn right? We're doing it in this way in this office, is what you're trying to tell him. We have a company, we have customers, we have a system and you have to learn the system. You can't just do your own thing. So in the same way, in Krishna consciousness, there is a system. There is a company which is serving and the customer is Krishna. And the whole company is dedicated to satisfying Krishna. And the whole company of the Vaishnavas is working to satisfy Krishna. Then anyone wants to join that company must also learn how to satisfy Krishna.

Do Not Associate With Mundane People

So for a sanyassi, to associate with such persons is like willingly drinking poison. Not only for a sanyassi but for a devotee. (Sanskrit) One should not associate with women who are addicted to lusty desires, nor should one associate with men who are addicted to such women. That is not recommended for one who is serious about going back to Godhead. Because it is said that sex life is the chain, maithunya argara it is the chain that binds us in the prison of material existence. “But it is natural, it is natural what can we say? You cannot be artificial. It is something, one of the natural inclinations of the body. Just like hunger and thirst. And it is also not only that... it's like a means to express affection and love. And one must also make a distinction between the gross just lusty activities which for example are going on in the red light district of Amsterdam and the exchanges in a loving relationship.”
Well that is also a fact. And a distinction is made and therefore Krishna says “Yes, Husband and Wife.” Then there is different thing (Sanskrit). But even in the Vedic culture of husband and wife would together go for spiritual life ........nowadays that's also not there. Spiritual life if it is at all there is something symbolic, and for most it is something in the background. It is not a very prominent thing. But in Vedic culture spiritual life was in the foreground. It was an important element in life. Prominent and should be. Therefore (Sanskrit).. sex life within religious principles within marriage .........for it was that at one point they would say: and now we perform a (Sanskrit) ritual, and then we'll purify ourselves, and then we'll try and receive a child. So in this way - Vedic Culture.
For all - it is not beneficial to associate with people who are in the grip of lust. At least not intimately. If one becomes very friendly with mundane people then after some time we also become mundane.

Mercy Is Being Showered!

We are following a process which is very very powerful and we just ourselves don't even believe it how powerful it is. We are chanting, thinking it is so difficult, can I really do it? Can I follow these regulative principles or not? It is a struggle. Can I really dedicate myself to chant these 16 rounds which are prescribed everyday without fail for the rest of my life? I don't know. Therefore we think that it is maybe a difficult process and we also ... as is stated in Bhagavad Gita (Sanskrit) that as we surrender unto the Lord we will be rewarded accordingly. So we think well... as I am giving myself to Krishna I will get the mercy. But, even a little bit of service for Krishna one is showered with mercy! So what to speak of regularly doing service for Krishna....we cannot imagine, we cannot imagine what is going on. .....You may not understand but on the platform of the soul it will act and you will get purified!

Running for the gold medal of going back to Godhead!

His (Lord Chaitanya) father expired and then traditionally the place in India where one would perform the sradha ceremony or the ceremony to invoke benediction for forefathers was performed in Gaya. In such a sradha ceremony one could actually deliver the forefathers from their sinful reactions. After death we are getting the reactions for our sinful activities and are being placed in various conditions. It is not that it is all over, rather then we are getting the reactions and are suffering for our sinful activities. So a son, a son was able to deliver, to deliver his father by performing a certain ritual to shorten distinctly the suffering conditions, the hellish conditions, and so that his father now in a new body could again attain a human form of life.

All this is of course now forgotten. But Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu performed this activity. It is not that this means that devotees should also..... So it's not that devotees have to perform the sradha ceremony. The people from India are often times very attached to performing the sradha ceremony, It is very difficult for them to give it up because it is such a tradition. But the scriptures say (Sanskrit) That when we are serving Krishna then there is no need for performing such ceremonies as the sradha ceremony because they are karma-kanda. Karma-kanda are all the ceremonies which are in the Vedas that give some temporary benefit. Some temporary benefit for material existence. But, if we perform devotional service automatically, automatically everyone is, all our family members are also being benefited. It is saying that 7 generations before and 7 generations are being benefited........ And if we go back to Godhead, they will also go, they go!

So I'm sure there are some relatives here of temple devotees so the best thing is, is you have to see your son and your daughter is like an athlete in the Olympics running for the gold medal of going back to Godhead!
And therefore you ought to encourage that child! Give it all the support like you would when your son and your daughter is going in the Olympics! Of course you want them to score a gold, back to Godhead:
“Come on you can do it!”
“You will do it!”
“You must do it, are you getting up every morning and so chanting your rounds?”

..... So this devotional service is a very powerful thing. It is so extraordinarily powerful that even those who are practising it are not aware of it. We are following a process which is very very powerful and we just ourselves don't even believe it how powerful it is!

(HH KKS 31/07/2005)

As Nimai He was the covert Incarnation of the Lord.

It is said that the first 24 years of the life of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu are consisting of His childhood pastimes and also His pastimes in the Grhastha Ashram. So it is said this period lasted up til His 24th year of age. At that time He became Nimai Pandit and as Nimai Pandit He was extraordinarily learned, there was no one who was like Nimai. But Nimai's learning was not in the science of Bhakti, but rather Nimai was expert in Vedic grammar and study of logic in the Vedic literature. So in this way Nimai was known as a great scholar.
But the devotee's were not recognising Him as the Supreme Lord.
He was the covert avatar.
The covert incarnation - The hidden incarnation of the Lord.

Renounced OR Attached?

Kadamba Kanana Swami was speaking in Sweden on the topic of renunciation:
Renunciation is nice but all the renunciation in the world will be of no value unless one becomes attached to Lord Krishna. Merely renouncing everything will not save one from the clutches of maya, the illusionary energy of the Lord, and thus one cannot become free from the cycle of birth, old age, disease and death. However if one becomes attached to Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, via devotional service unto Him, one will be satisfied with their state of natural renunciation and thus be able to become free from the clutches of maya.
He mentioned that he liked the fact that Jayadwaita Swami (his own spiritual master) is fully satisfied with being a renounced personality, which can only be due to his obvious attachment to Lord Krishna.
So we should not concentrate on renunciation, instead simply try to attach yourself to the devotional service of Lord Krishna and in this way, you will be satisfied with whatever situation the Lord before you.

Please Dont Feed ME

Kadamba Kanana Swami recently said "Fasting is never an issue in ISKCON; Dieting is." He said that he is thinking of putting a sign around his neck "Please Don't Feed".
dont-feed-sign.jpg

So let us all remember that we should offer gifts and food to him with love and devotion but within reason. He is not a prashadam (sanctified food) machine!

Incoceivable Potency!

It says that if you chant the Holy Name of the Lord only once you will be purified for more sinful activities than you can commit in an entire lifetime...can you imagine?! Can we all say together just once- The whole mantra.

Hare Krishna! Hare Krishna! Krishna Krishna! Hare Hare!
Hare Rama! Hare Rama! Rama Rama! Hare Hare!

So, that was quick wasn't it? More sinful activities destroyed now than we can commit in an entire lifetime! . Have you ever thought about the power of the Maha-Mantra in that way? I don't think so, I don't think so. So it is certainly not an ordinary thing, and we are just not aware of the power, the power of this movement. Just bow down before the Deities once, with our head on the ground right? Just, just that alone, will be sufficient for Krishna to accept us as His devotee! You know - it's all these things are extraordinarily powerful, actually , yeah you do them all very casual, yes also Maha-Prasad to ..."Thank you very much it tastes nice I like maha-prasad, good taste."
But the potency of it.....

The potency is inconceivable. Just by doing these things one transforms!

Book Distribution Story from Lilasukha devi dasi

The story of Lilasukha devi dasi from Prague, Czech Republic.

We just visited Prague for a few days. There we were given the following report of how a disciple of Kadamba Kanana Swami preached Krsna Consciousness which had a profound rapid effect on a conditioned soul. He was very happy with her service and gave his mercy in the form of his garland and encouraging words at the end of the class. Here is the inspirational story:

Lilasukha recently whilst doing prashadam distribution on the high street, met a young local girl. This girl was from a Buddhist background. She was invited by Lilasukha to the Czech Farm. Soon after they met on the farm where she was distributed a Bhagavad Gita As It Is as a gift. This innocent young girl was greatly inspired. This resulted in her reading the whole Bhagavad Gita within a few days. She immediately bought japa beads and began engaging in the yuga dharma - Harinam Sankirtan. By the way, it should be emphasised that all this was achieved within week or two, by the mercy of Lilasukha  and on the strength of the mercy of Kadamba Kanana Swami. She decided to become a devotee of Lord Krishna merely from the words of Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita.

With great jubilitaion it was announced that she is stepping into the front line preaching herself, by going distribuing prashadam at their local rock festival, which is no easy feat for anyone, let alone a brand new lady in our movement.

So with great pleasure this news was received by Kadamba Kanana Swami and he personally thanked Lilasukha for her desire to preach this transceental message to others. This sacrifice made by her, having come through a tough unhappy state, to expand the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was very much pleasing to him. So in similar fashion, we should follow in the footsteps of our God sister and in this way we will certainly bring that lovely smile to Kadamba Kanana Swami's face.

$piritual Bank Balance £+ Don't forget...Interest! %

Whatever service you do the benefit goes into your spiritual bank balance and it is kept there eternally! Even if later you give up devotional service: That stays in your bank balance!
It's not only the service is going into the spiritual bank balance but there is also interest! And that interest is not just an ordinary percentage like 4% or something like that...No...The interest percentage is unlimted because it says whenever Krishna remembers the service his appreciation increases...Krishna, He never forgets, He is eternal and His memory is eternal so His appreciation is going on eternally for all serivce done so the interest for the service that we are getting is unlimitedly increasing! So this is the nature of Krishna!

Krishna's Appreciation For Our Service Is Growing And Growing

When the Lord comes into this material world He is never an ordinary man (sanskrit) the mudhas or the less intelligent think that the Lord is taking the form of an ordinary human being. Devotees understand that Krishna is always transcendental . Krishna is always Krishna. The reason why He appears is that He is very merciful because He is very kind .... We can read more about the merciful nature of Krishna. It is very important to understand Krishna’s quality of being merciful because that is the quality that will purchase us.
We can read in the Caitanya Caritamrita that there is a discussion between Shankar Pandit and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Shankar Pandit said , “My dear Lord You have purchased us” and Lord Chaitanya said “ no no no ...you have purchased Me” So the devotee purchases the Lord and the Lord becomes controlled by the devotee, by the service of the devotee. By the service of the devotee the Lord becomes touched in his heart and then He becomes moved and therefore He becomes inclined towards that devotee.

It is described like that, on one occasion Draupadi was being disrobed in the assembly of the Kauravas. Somehow or other some man was trying to pull off her sari and she didn’t know what to do ...so the only option was to pray to Krishna. Krishna provided unlimited saris and although they were pulling off the sari the whole floor, whole room was filled up with sari...an ocean of cloth! So it is said that at that time she threw her hands in the air and she called out “ Hey Govinda!” she took full shelter of Govinda and it is said that Krishna then later mentioned that “Whenever I remember how Draupadi was praying to Me and at that time how she was fully remembering Me ...Then my heart melts. My heart melts in appreciation and just by remembering this My heart melts and my appreciation grows...it becomes bigger and bigger.”
So this is very significant and I am remembering this pastime again and again because,... it gives me great faith and encouragement in Krishna, that He is so kind that whatever service we do He remembers it and His appreciation for it grows! So each time He is thinking: “How nice that he did this service for me , that was really very very nice.” And He is thinking: “ Wonderful that they did this service for me , so wonderful , I am so moved”
In this way Krishna is actually increasing His appreciation of our service. so that is the nature of Krishna ‘s mercy....that His appreciation for us is always growing for any service we do!

The Lord Performs Amazing Pastimes

Lord Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead appears in this world and apparently takes birth.
In Srimad Bhagavatam , Srimati Kunti Devi is describing like that. She is saying that how amazing it is, is that the Supreme Personality of Godhead appears to take birth and at the same time does not take birth. How amazing is it that He is performing work and yet at the same time is not performing work....
The Lord neither takes birth and nor does He do any work so it says that one has to understand the nature of the birth and the work of theLord...but the Lord doesn’t take birth and He doesn’t work so how can we understand this! We have a problem here!

He doesn’t take birth, He just appears like the sun ...He appears from one universe to another...again and again...the Supreme Personality of Godhead is always existing and never ceases to exist for a moment. We with our bodies have a very temporary situation, we are undergoing changing bodies. It appears that when Krishna comes into this world that He is also subjected to the changing of bodies..because it appears that Krishna appears as a small child . Krishna is described at one point He was a small baby, and as a small baby Krishna was speaking very simple talk... like children do! and it is said that Krishna and Balarama when they grew up as young boys, they started to walk a little bit and they grab hold of the tails of the calves and the calves were pulling them through the mud and they were sliding on the back of the calves and everyone was watching! The kids liked it and the people liked it!

It is said that when Krishna grew up a little more He became an expert thief who then spent His time stealing ...right very expertly! It is said that Krishna distributed the milk and yoghurt that He stole to the monkeys. The monkeys in the previous life had done such nice service ...how could he ever repay them . We know that when Krishna in His previous incarnation as Lord Ramacandra helped Him to fight Ravana and regain Sita ..so for this in His next life He repaid the monkeys with butter and yoghurt directly from His hand! Just see how kind the Lord performs the pastimes to be merciful to all the living beings.
That is the nature. So when we speak of the birth and work of Krishna ..we should understand that Krishna does not really take birth although it appears like that but that He is eternally the Supreme Personality of Godhead who sometimes comes within this material world!

House program in Amsterdam - 11 aug 2009

Maharaja graced our house by a short visit and leading our little home program. Although he was very tired from the last two Ratha Yatra festivals in Leipzig and Berlin, Germany, he tirelessly sang bhajans. The program was attended by 15 devotees and there was a nice informal atmosphere. Maharaja spoke in the beginning about some insights into kali and similarities in other religions. During and after prasadam he spoke about his book that he is composing at the moment. It will be called "Visvram Mandir" and it deals with the "sacred space" that we need to cultivate and from where we can extract the drive to continue in Krishna Consciousness. It is our duty to fill this sacred space with our finest memories, situations and other positive experiences as a storage. We then can go into our sacred space as a meditation and be reminded about Krishna.

The program continued till 22:00 after which the last guest left home again. It was a wonderful short visit and everybody was happy. Gauranga !!

ZAP! ZAP! "I love You" "I love You"

It’s not so cheap - Krishna wants voluntary surrender. If He wants He can zap us!
ZAP! “I love You Lord!”
“I love you” “I love You” ZAP ZAP!
"I love You" ZAP! "I love you" ZAP!
He can do it but that would be cheap.
He wants our voluntary surrender all the way. Therefore some struggle is required. It can not be avoided, but if we do it – immediateley He will respond so much.
He may test us a little bit to see how serious we are.

"Take it now!"

(Devotee discusses difference in what has heard about the different ages)

HH KKS: Srila Prabhupada clearly stated that the Golden age would last 10,000 years. The total Kali yuga lasts 432,000 years. 5000 years have already passed. That puts us at 427,000 years to go and it’s 10,000 years Golden age of Lord Chaitanya and still 417,000 of Kali yuga. And at the end of that Kalki is suppose to appear and Kalki will destroy the sinful souls, the sinful conditioned souls...and then some sages who are waiting in the Himalayas will reaappeear and the atmosphere will change and satya yuga will be there. That’s the way we have always learned it .
But sometimes there are these differences between different vaishnavas...and then in the end of the day who cares! We don’t care what’s going to happen after Lord Chaitnaya is going to go: all that we know is..”Take it now!”
Take it now..that is the essence

Plastic country, Yes Really Nice!

Previously in Vedic times people would keep a cow and they would milk the cow in the mornings, quite nice..early morning milk your own cow...fresh milk; that is the way to live actually. If you think about it, it's a lot better then walk to a fridge and you know warm it up in the microwave and what not... "PING!" breakfast! That is modern times. "Oh can i cook something for you?" "Well ok yeah sure" and they go into the kitchen (Maharaja makes noise of loud microwave) "Cooking finished!" Modern times! What world are we living in? We're living in a world where we have forgotten who is the proprietor, where we have forgotten the purpose of the world, we have forgotten that everything is actually meant for Krishna. And the result is, the result is that in the name of progrss we have less and less.
In traditional India, matajess, the ladies would wear gold bangles...nowadays plastic! Nowadays, some are probably real gold, but so many are just plastic, everything plastic. Previously in the winter: wool sweater from Australia, real wool..Auzzie wool..right?
Nowadays who touches wool...now fleece right? Fleece, you can't wear wool, it's fleece right..improved quality? What is it? It is just plastic actually! Plastic clothes, Plastic food, Plastic surgery, Plastic nose!!
Plastic teeth, Plastic heart ...yes and that's alright ..."We live in the plastic world." The plastic garbage island in front of New york, it's growing a kilometre every year, getting bigger and bigger. Yes in the future we can live there, Plastic country, Yes really nice! So this is the nature of modern times. Everything so artificial.

Time For Spiritual Life

In Vrindavan, actually at one point, I was the Temple president of a temple there. it was a very big temple, much bigger than this one... so i never had a peaceful moment! Prabhupada our founder Acharya made the rule and the rule was to sign off every cheque that goes out of the temple. A lot of cheques everyday, lots of them, so they come all the time: "please can you sign this, please can you sign this?" Sometimes I was in the shower, they would knock on the door and say "please please open up, can you sign this cheque?"!
Somehow or other I would escape sometimes, escape the office and go to Govardhana..not far..20km from the temple(the hill that was lifted by Krishna) and then I thought that.."Ah today I will have a spiritual day and then I will meet people there and they would say 'i've been looking for you all week..can you please sign this cheque?'"!...Yes too much..I was thinking that my life has been spoilt.. So one day I decided that today I will go for a walk in the fields , no one will find me there, and it was true, I was having a great time walking in the fields and everything was nice, and then I met one farmer there....kind of a simple man.
He said "Do you see this land?" "Yes" "It is my land" "Oh, it is very nice" " Yes and the crop that is growing on this land is the best! It is the very best crop"
..he is a like child..look at my bike it's the very best.
"really , is this your crop? Oh really nice ..uh"...just treating him like a child and he said "Yes you know, i come here everyday" "Really you come here everyday?"
"Yes I come here everyday for one hour" " Really? you come here everyday for one hour?" Farmer said " Yes and then I go home and then I do Puja" Then I thought this man isn't so childish! he works for one hour everyday and then the rest of the days he is doing Puja! ...and me I spend my whole day signing cheques and what not! He is simple, probably has a house, little two rooms at most, he probably has several children and they help him do Puja and like that simple life ....... very simple life but actually he has time for spiritual life.

Do Service and Be Fixed

Prabhupada said the idle mind is the devil's workshop. We will be dwelling on sex and money. So the idle mind is the devil's workshop ...so one will dwell on sex and money, Prabhupada said. Therefore one must take up devotional service. One must seriously engage in devotional service. This devotional service must be very absorbing, there must be a lot to do so that we just don't have time ...or otherwise (sanskrit) ...enjoy and renounce..enjoy and renounce...enjoy and renounce....
So when we go to that state then we can become more fixed- when we are actually being fixed in the regulative principles and fixed in spiritual practices and never break them then purification of the heart can take place much more quick. So this is required. This is what Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu taught and all of His associates are showing us this example.

Getting Strength From Association

..so this is the biggest problem ...on the one hand we think I really want Krishna, I really do, I really want spiritual life but on the other hand we can’t: on the other hand there is another part in us that wants something else. Sometimes when we are in the spiritual mode we don't want that part of our self, we say “I wish I didn't have that” but then we snap out of the spiritual mode and we again don't want spiritual life, so much. Somehow we are accepting and then we are giving up and we are accepting, giving up and sometimes take to spiritual life and sometimes take to material life.
So we are caught in these changing states of consciousness. When we embrace spiritual life, as they say in English “the grass is greener on the other side” so when we are enjoying the material energy we want to give it up and we want to take to spiritual life and when we are practicing spiritual life then we start to think about the material energy. So we are going up and down in these two states. So this is a very intense state in spiritual life. That is the state where one has to hold on very close...very close to devotees. One should always be with devotees. Not for a moment go away from the devotees. “never go out alone,” as they used to say to us in the early days when we joined that “you can not go out alone” it was not allowed, it was against the codes of the temple ...nowadays noone really cares about that but in the old days, “oh no you can not be alone for a moment ..always associate with the devotee”
Well it is a fact that when one is in the stage of (Sanskrit)(up and down) it is dangerous not to associate with the devotee because one is so weak...maya is still so strong. Although we desire spiritual life we just don’t feel we have the strength for spiritual life. So the more we are with devotees who are betyond this state of (Sanskrit) who are no longer giving in into the senses, who are actually living a life free from sense gratification, a life free from sexual involvement , a life free from just satisfying the tongue this way and that way and who is only taking Krsna Prasadam and everything is pure.....then we get strength from this association. ….So one must be in that association.

Miracles do happen/ it has never been easier...

Miracles do happen. The real miracle is the mercy of Krishna. That is the real miracle and that miracle of the mercy of Krishna is what is so powerful that it will transform us. It will transform us. It will transform us. And that miracle is taking place. The mercy of Krishna is everywhere. The whole universe is filled with the mercy of Krishna, he unlimitedly distributed His mercy everywhere, and still- there is special mercy to get. Not only the general mercy, that is available equally to all. Krishna has left nice Deity forms all over the universe, Krishna has left the sastra all over the universe- it has been translated- these books can be read by all of us, and by somany outside this space. So the mercy is available equally to all of us. There is no doubt. But, than there is the other mercy, that individual mercy.

That special individual mercy arrangement that Krishna will make for you, if you are able to attract it by your eagerness to serve Him, by your enthusiasm in service. So we must show this enthusiasm, this seriousness somehow or other-we must do it. We must otherwise we are wasting this lifetime. And it won’t get better! Already … maybe in the past babies were being fed on breast milk, but as things are going on less and less, and it becomes artificial stuff with meat products inside. And in the future we will grow up taking meat from the very moment of birth.

So it will only be more difficult to overcome conditioning, because the conditioning will become worse. What if cannibalism takes off in the future in Kali-yuga and you become the son of the cannibal? And you have grown up nicely eating your neighbors and other people in the neighborhood or from other parts of town, raiding the place… living off cannibalism. Well, then it is hard when you join the devotees- then you have to control that too! Every time you see a tasty devotee walking in… and it is obvious that devotees may become tasty because they are taking all this nice prasadam, so some of them become nice, fatty and effulgent from all this prasadam, so it looks really much tastier than some ordinary karmi. Right?

Then again, your sense control will only become more difficult. Then you cannot even look at the devotee and get hungry. So you will have to overcome that desire as well.

So it won’t be easier in the next birth. It will never be easier then this birth. This is the best birth you have! So let us take advantage now and do something to attract the mercy of Krishna.

And if we do something to attract the mercy of Krishna, then a miracle will also take place for us… so do not just sit around on the nice soft cushion in a nice templeroom in a nice temple enjoying your spiritual life.

We must do something to attract the mercy of Krishna! And if we do that miracle will happen. .. it is not possible by your own endeavors’, but by attracting the mercy it is possible. So we sould make endeavor to attract the mercy.

So we cannot just make it easy in this movement, and take it easy in this movement. We got to do what is difficult. We got to make the sacrifice. We got to do for Krishna what is difficult. And if we do that- then Krishna is seeing- oh, look, he is trying. And then He gives a little mercy and then- Hej- you feel it! It starts happening, after all these years when I felt so stale in my spiritual life, now I begin to feel something is happening. I get a little mercy. Then you go more, you try more and more, and more.

In modern times we have forgotten simplicity

We may take what we need for our own maintenance, but the rest belongs to Krishna and thus actually everything in this world is owned by Krishna...and therefore should be used for His purposes....of course, we should take care of ourselves, keep ourselves fit and in good condition so that we can function but then beyond it everything goes to Krishna........That's not What Modern is all about!
In modern times things have changed a lot, in traditional times there used to be kings, they lived in palaces and ordinary people lived in small cottages...it was simple, but as times developed we got a modern society and in modern societies everybody can be kings and queens...everyone! That is a wonderful thing. Yes any person can have a palace oh yes....and you want a coach in front of the door..yesyes "how many horse power does your coach have!" Everyone is driving around in fancy cars, everyone has a palace and "what are you having for breakfast this morning your majesty?!...do you want some mango juice imported from Africa? or would you rather some fruits flown in from South America? Would you prefer some (kinka brui) from Sweden? or would you rather have cheese straight from South Africa? what would you, like?!"
"Is that all you have?!"
"No we have fresh, fresh orange juice and we have fresh biological dynamic milk straight from the cow"...yes these things also, we get that everyday..."Do you have anything special?" "Well to tell you the truth we have some mangos flown in straight from Mumbai"
.............Ok in this way we are living in royal opulence; cupboards full of clothes, fridges full of food, we throw out all the extras that we don't need.
In the mid eighties, I was staying in this temple and sometimes in the cool room there used to be big, big bins full of halwa left over, no one would touch them..you know because cold halwa, no one in Melbourne eats cold halwa, we eat only hot halwa!...yes so we are living in this modern world, so many things we have and we are accustomed to it and ... everyone is living as a king..........So in modern times we have forgotten what simplicity is all about.
