Healed from the Material Disease

Srila Prabhupada’s mood was that, as you preach, you will become healed from the material disease. So Srila Prabhupada recommended it as a simultaneous process. Of course, we should not go on an automatic pilot. We should be serious about our own purification, and I think that is what Aindra wanted to say. Because I also heard him many times, and he was an intense person- super intense! And he was really like; “You know, we should do something to purify ourselves”. Yes we should, and we should give out the mercy. So we should chant good rounds: We should rise early: We shouldn’t go to bed too late, and then we can do it.

Kamadev Stopped!

We were caught in the traffic for a long long time. On the way from the farm to here. So I read a lot of Slokas on the way, and one in particular…well the one I liked…well there’s many that I like actually, but here’s one that I liked:

Not by wearing Saffron cloth,
Not by restricting food or fasting,
Or other types of sense control,
Not by living in the forest,
Not by discussing philosophy,
And not by observing a vow of silence,
But, only by even the slightest beginning of the devotional service to the Lotus Feet of Lord Govinda, who enjoys pastimes on the Yamuna’s white banks, is Kamadev stopped!

Thinking feeling and willing are related to the mind and the senses, so when the feeling is so strong:

‘But I have to do it!’
‘Why?!’

‘Because I feel it! I feel that it’s right and I have to do it’
‘But the intelligence says it’s wrong’

‘No but I feel it!’
‘No, intelligence says it’s wrong!’

But I FEEL IT!!!’

Intelligence - Putting Things Into Practice

Bhakta Frederick was so much very enthused from Kadamba Kanana Swami's association in Sweden this month. He asked some very interesting questions, jumped up and down in all the Kirtans, came to drop Maharaja to the airport and then...sent us here at the KKS blog a wonderful transcript from Kadamba Kanana Swami's talk!

After Maharaja's talk at the Sweden Hare Krishna farm we had took some photos.
Here's one of me and our new friend Bhakta Frederick! Thank's for the nectar below!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Sweden August 2010)

It is said when we become pure devotees of Krsna, then Krsna Himself will be seated within our heart. Then we will see Krsna directly, the Supreme Lord, within our heart. And then He will directly reveal so many things to us. Then one simply acts as the agent of the Lord -so that is another level of intelligence, and that is the desired level of intelligence. That is complete, when intelligence has really penetrated fully unto the level of the heart - Not just all very intellectual but, because we begin to put things into practice, that intellectual knowledge also becomes realized and when the knowledge is fully realized, then intelligence happens on the platform of the heart, and then Krsna is steering that intelligence!Anyway, then it is fully full intelligence. So like that we are gradually increasing our intelligence in devotional service - Not necessarily that we'll in the beginning will only be able to do simple mathematical formulas and if you chant Hare Krsna for 20 years you'll be doing quantum mechanics! It's not exactly like that. Not automatically, but one's intelligence becomes deeper and more complete and one will see everything in it’s full perspective, because intelligence is meant to place things in a proper perspective, that is the essence. Otherwise one will take part in sources of misery which are in relation to the material senses.
So many sources of misery, and due to ignorance we take part in these sources of misery. That ignorance can be simply a lack of knowledge, total ignorance, that we have no idea what's going on, or it can be a more subtle type of ignorance where we know : we know it's bad, and still we do it, because we don't really , we don't know in full depth how bad it is. We think:
"Yes, it's bad, but it's also good, and it's a combination of two, and the good is not so bad, and I'll take the bad with the good, and after all the good looks a lot better than the bad!"
and then we go for it!
The good always looks good, but it's never as good as it looked, and the bad, when you get it, it's always worse than it looked before! That seems to be the nature of good and bad, so keep that in mind, when you're observing the situation. So in this way in intelligence we are seeing on a deeper level. We're seeing what is beneficial in my relationship with Krsna.
It says "preyas, sreyas," immediate and long-term, okay; the long term, the relationship with Krsna. Difficult to come to that point, hm.. Difficult. As we are going through life, so many times, we just choose the wrong thing. We just choose, knowingly we choose the wrong thing. We just choose something temporary in this world, and it's just:
‘Love, this love and that love and so much love’
and then -- so much misery!
Yeah, it's amazing. It happens, it happens. So again and again, it happens, and we think:
"Oh, this time it's real. Absolutely. This time it's different. I tell you, this time it's different!"
It's not any different at all, okay! It's not. It's the same! It's the same as all the other times!
Exactly the same, again and again!
That's what Bhagavatam is telling us [we] say:
"No, no, no. The Bhagavatam doesn't know what it's talking about. That's a book, and this is life! You know? And, you know, everything in life can't be in a book!"
NO NO NO It is! It's all in the book! It really is, it's all there!
Everything that's there in life, is actually in Bhagavatam. It's not that something hasn't been included in the Bhagavatam. It's all there!

Do I have to do all that work?

Our problem is not that the chanting doesn’t work. Our problem is that we don’t work when it comes to chanting. Our problem is that we think:
“Phhheeeww, do I really have to lift my hand? And put it all the way inside that bead bag. These beads are very heavy! Then do I have to do all that work? And move my fingers on these beads? It’s tiring! (laughter). I really have to do all that? Better I take a little rest first, so that I will have some energy. Oops, already prasadam time!”

In this way, the rounds will remain for the late night. It’s that time that we chant. Maybe, with one finger on the keyboard of the computer, and a few rounds while driving. Then a few rounds while shopping, and the rest of the rounds in front of the TV. Like that we somehow or other faithfully everyday chant our 16 rounds for the pleasure of the Lord. “ My dear Krsna this is my offering to you and I’m doing it with love and devotion”.

THE LAWMAKER
Everything is going on in the universe by the arrangement of the Lord and we are remembering like that, and that nothing is going on automatically as the scientists think by laws – but rather that these laws are going on by the arrangement of the Supreme Lord. As Prabhupada was saying they can see the laws but can’t see the law maker.

BECOMING FEARLESS
So we are simply seeing Krishna and in that way a devotee can become fearless. Fear has it’s origin in being separate from Krishna. So when there is distance from Krishna, separated from Krishna , then there is fear, but when one is actually one in purpose with Krishna, when one is servant of Krishna, fully dedicating himself to the mission of Krishna then there is no more fear. Even the demigods are acting out of fear because they have a separate agenda than the agenda of Krishna, they want to serve Krishna but they also want to enjoy their own facilities. So therefore they are also in fear. But when are completely having no other purpose and to fulfil the purpose of Krishna then all fear disappears…

IN AND OUT OF CONTROL
One should cultivate such fearlessness, that measns we simply accept what Krishna arranges – but that’s not so much the case because we can see how much we are conditioned – because we always want to control the situation:
“Oh it’s getting out of control!”
But out of who’s control?! It’s not getting of Krishna’s control!... maybe out of our control but never out of Krishna’s control…(Sanskrit) the material energy is always under Krishna’s controil. But for us the material energy is very difficult to deal with. It is said that it is perplexing. The material energy is perplexing. It means that it gets out of control even when we are not expecting it, even when something was so many times so easy to control- Suddenly it doesn’t work. Suddenly it gets out of control.

GOING ON BY CHANCE!
It is amazing sometimes. The things that can happen in the material world. A story is therE, which was found in the newspaper:
The story was in Spain, in Spain they have big forest fires- they have helicopters with big water tanks, that are used to fight these forest fires. So there was this forest fire and the helicopters were flying to the sea, and they come with their tanks and scoop out the water. So there was this one man and he was snorkling in the sea! …and he had gone quite a distance and somehow or other the helicopter did not see him, maybe he noticed the helicopter but it was too late! They scooped him up in the tank, then they dropped him on the forest fire! So of course he got cooked alive and then later they identified this man and it turned out he was the owner of a …..Lobster restaurant!
And that was in the paper! Even the karmis could see that there was maybe a connection!
They could even see that maybe, he was putting living lobsters in boiling water and now he was himself put alive in the fire - and even they could see the connection- So in this way nothing is going on by chance – everything is going on by the arrangement of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

IMPEREFCT ARRANGEMENT BY GOD?
A rationalistic philosopher, David Hume is like really the founders of nationalism and who took the western tradition away from God consciousness. One of his arguments was that if you say that everything is going on by the design of the Supreme Lord then why are there natural disasters?- which prove that things are not perfectl y arranged. That’s what he was saying, there are natural disasters, there are flood , there are famines, there are earthquakes, these prove that things are not going on by a perfect design….
Wrong! He was thinking of God as an order supplier and that the Supreme Lord simply has to provide everything we need and he never thought that when the Supreme Lord thinks that we are ready for a flood and He sends us the flood – that he didn’t see.
So we see that in this way everything including calamities are part of the perfect arrangement of the Supreme Lord and that they have a purpose…..

ARRANGEMENT OF THE LORD…In india there were about 7000 people killed by this Tsunami, so the whole world was full of sympathy and they offered help to India, international help to deal with the crisis and India said; ’It’salright, we can handle this, we don’t need international help ‘
– because India is a place where there are so many floods, so many such things. People there can accept such things, they are of course sad but it is not the end of the world. They can accept it is the will of the world and this spirit of accepting calamities as the will of the Lord, is the unique strength of India. No country has gone through as much trouble as India, in terms of famine, in terms of flood, in terms of eartquakes…huge earthquales , huge calamities, and yet people take it as somehow or other it is the arrangement of the Lord, somehow or other it is due to beqause of our karma. Therefore they can accept, they can accept such destiny.
So this mood of acceptance is the beginning of becoming fearless…

TOTALLY DIFFERENT APPROACH…Srila Prabhupada was saying that In his childhood, there was a cholera epidemic – this class is full of nectar – it goes from one disaster to another disaster!..just to enliven everyone!
Srila Prabhupada was describing that there was a choldera epedemic when he was a child and people were dying like flies and that the solution to the whole thing was Harinama! So everyday when they had a lot of Harinam, then the epidemic subsided!
So that was a totally different approach to the western approach. This really is what I’m talking about, I’m not really talking about disasters, I’m talking about the approach to depending on the Supreme Personality of Godhead and to take shelter of Him and to see Him as the main source of our protection, which is very different from the western approach.

RELY ON KRISHNA
So we are simply taking shelter of devotional service, then everything will simply be taken care of. We are not saying that it is forbidden to make some security arrangement but we see that Srila Prabhupada was very much relying on Krishna.

Balarama Meditations...

From the notes of Kadamba Kanana Swami

Balarama is the elder brother of Krsna and also the direct expansion of Krsna. He is non-different from Krsna; in fact, the same Supreme Personality of Godhead, Balarama and Krsna, appear in two forms but in these two forms They have a different mood. Krsna is the supreme enjoyer, Krsna is the one to whom all sacrifices are being offered to, Krsna is the controller of all the planetary systems...In this way Krsna is always the Supreme Lord.

But Balarama is the Lord in a mood of a servant. He is the Supreme servant. He is always serving Krsna and it is said that Balarama experiences the greatest pleasure, even greater than Krsna, because in service there is greater pleasure than in taking...

Krishna has to be Number One

Rohini is just full of transcendental luster due to her overwhelming love for Balarama. An ocean of love for Balarama - But she loves Krishna millions of times more, Rupa goswami says!
So in this way – initiation means everything for Krishna. Krishna is the most important in our life. Of course one can theoretically say that at the day of initiation and that in this mood:
‘Krishna I am yours!’
But in reality one is not. It takes a life time of surrender. It is an ongoing process to surrender more and more and at the end of life we still fall short. But then we pray for the mercy of the Lord to take us back. So this is our challenge now and that is why initiation is a total change. Yes, up to this point, Krishna consciousness was part of our life- up to this point we could not imagine life without Krishna…but now Krishna has to be number one!
Completely, really, really!…and that is a big change for everyone. So in that way it is significant, this initiation. That takes strength. So we take that strength, we take this strength from Lord Balarama.
Lord Balarama is also represented by the spiritual master – because Balarama is the Adi guru – the Original Spiritual Master and all spiritual masters are following in the mood of Lord Balarama. So we are then trying to dedicate our life more and more to the service of Krishna.

Chant for Millions of Lifetimes!

Everyone can become a pure devotee to chanting the holy name. (Sanskrit) “Oh my Lord out of kindness you’ve invested all your transcendental energies on these names”. Then of course there is that line: “But, I am so unfortunate that I have no attraction for them”. So that is maybe our situation.

On the one hand, the holy name can bring us all perfection without a doubt. It’s very hard to spoil it. It’s very difficult to spoil the chanting of the holy name. Only if one consciously starts to act sinful and ignore - that by thinking that chanting will make it up. Than one can chant for millions of lifetimes and not make any advancement. (Sanskrit) One can chant for millions of lifetimes and never get love of God if one makes such offences. But anybody who is trying to avoid them – success guaranteed!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 24th June 2010)

Freedom!

The human form of life is the life of responsibility where one is responsible for his actions and where every action has a reaction. So that is there. But the human form of life offers us that freedom to choose, to choose for the Supreme Lord. That freedom is given to us and as soon as we take up this devotional service we become further empowered. The human form of life is already more empowered than the animal form of life – but when one takes up service to Krishna then we become empowered and with that empowerment we gain our freedom. Empowerment is what freedom is about…

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur is explaining that the jiva that is taking up devotional service is empowered witht the Cit and the Anand Shaktis. That is logical because the spirit soul who is the spiritual world in the condition of Sat Cit Ananda, eternity full of bliss and full of knowledge. But in this material world eternity is not attained. In this material world we are in a temporary situation, in a temporary body- but the other two: full bliss and full knowledge can be obtained within this material body.

Like that, one becomes empowered – this knowledge potency and this bliss potency – first to limited degrees but to ever increasing degrees, there is basically no limit to that.

It is there that we find our freedom!

We Keep On Trying!

Kadamba Kanana swami really encourages the devotees at New Radha Kunda, Sweden, August 2010:
"We keep on trying!"

Devotional service is so powerful it will always act and therefore gradually that devotional service will take over, there is no doubt about it. So we are not worried that ‘this process will not work for some.’
Just like a medicine you don’t know if it’s going to work, it works for some people but doesn’t work for others- but devotional service is not likethat. Devotional service, it’s not that it works for some but doesn’t work for others – we may be the exception: ‘ it doesn’t work for me’

No, devotional service works for everyone, it always works, it never fails to act. As soon as one somehow or other connects to devotional service one will be purified.
Srila Prabhupada had this great conviction and on the strength of that he was ready to approach anyone and everyone. He wasn’t considering, wasn’t considering who was qualified and who was not qualified, because he had this strong faith that this would act. But we don’t have this faith and particularly in relation to ourselves, we often times think that this is not going to work:
‘it’s not working’..not even that it’s not going to work : ‘it’s not working...we are experiencing, it’s not working’

So that is the illusory energy where we think that our maya is so strong that it can not be overcome, where we think the rahu, the rahu in our astrological chart that is lasting for such a long time is stronger than anything else!
“What can I do I am in my rahu period’! There’s nothing I can do about it and it is going to last for another nineteen years – and for nineteen years my spiritual life is going to be a total mess. Three astrologers have confirmed it , even the Brigu reader in India has said it you know. I am doomed and that’s the way it is. For 19 years I’ll be doomed and there is nothing I can do, and I just have to ride it out. But then after I go to the Jupiter period then it will be very nice, when I am forty seven and then suddenly everything will go very nice in my spiritual life’

What rubbish, what garbage, what nonsense! Material considerations have nothing to do with bhakti. Because it is explained that the bhakti creeper is not dependent. Bhakti lata, it is a creeper. So generally when a creeper is growing, it needs support, it grows on a tree, it grows on a wall. But this bhakti lata does not need any support. No support at all. Bhakti therefore is not dependant on anything. Nothing at all.
In the Caitanya Caritamrita Madya Lila, chapter fifteen text 108 it is said that bhakti does not even depend on initiation. Is says the Holy Name is not depending on intiation. Even that, because the Holy Name can produce all results, all the results. There is no material contamination that needs another solution. This medicine is always effective. It always works.

The only problem is if we don’t take it. If we don’t take it then it is a little difficult to work. Right? …….
….Knowledge can increase our eagerness in devotional service. So the more knowledge we develop about the potency of the Holy Name, the potency of devotional service, the more eager we will be to perform it, the more eager we will be to take advantage because then we realise it’s not impossible. Although emotionally at present spiritual life feels: ‘It’s too difficult’ ’It’s nice, it’s good, it’s the truth but it’s too difficult’
This tendency to think that ‘Yes, I believe in Krishna consciousness, yes yes I believe in bhakti yoga, yes yes I believe that it is the truth. Yes yes but I don’t believe in myself. I don’t belive that I can do it’

That is a more subtle form of faithlessness. People that say I have no faith in devotional service, well we can say that is unfortunate but if we just study the argument and the logic then many of us can accept ..’yes, why would God not be ever fresh, why would He not be all powerful, why would He not be all knowing, why would He not be the most famous person, why not, why would He not be a person, if everywhere there is a person, if everything has personality, then why not Him if He is the origin, shouldn’t the creation reflect the nature of the creator? Logical’
Like that one can hear all the arguments and accept the system of belief of Krishna consciousness. It makes sense , it gives a complete picture. But then what? Then we have no self confidence:
‘I’ve never been successful in my life, I know my limitations, I just can’t do it, what can I say, and I’ve already tried I couldn’t do it. I tried to follow the four regulative principles but I couldn’t do it therefore bhakti yoga is too difficult for me, what can I do now? Maybe I’ll do hatha yoga now!’

Totally missing the point! Success is not measured whether we can follow the regulative principles or not. In the preliminary stages or the early stages of Krishna consciousness we may not be able to follow the four regulative principles. That doesn’t matter, we keep on trying. Prabhupada often said:
‘Failure is the pillar of success’
Prabhupada said just like children, it is natural for a child to walk. It takes a certain amount of effort and in the beginning the child will fall and fall and fall and again and again and one day it will walk. So in the same way in the beginning we may struggle, we may not be able to follow:
‘Yeah but me it’s not just the beginning I’ve been like this for the last thirty five years!!!’
Well, then it’s a beginning of thirty five years. Even that’s not so long.
‘Not so long!!! That’s half my life!!! Half a life time at least!!’
Yeah but that’s not so much, you still have the other half to be Krishna conscious!

Qualities of Isvara Puri

Kadamba Kanana Swami gave a wonderful talk and vibrant kirtan at Uddhava Prabhu and Vishaka Devi Dasi's house in Amsterdam.

'Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took initiation from Isvara Puri. Isvara Puri, his claim to fame was that he was a very humble servant, dedicated servant of his spiritual master. He served Madhavendra Puri to the end of his life, who had became paralysed – which is kind of amazing because such a personality, such an Acharya, has to go through that. And then sometimes he was lying in his own stool- and Isvara Puri was cleaning - taking care of him completely with great dedication and for this selfless dedication, Isvara Puri got all the blessings.
Therefore Isvara Puri stands for being the greatest servant, that is his quality and he became the spiritual master of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Of course the Supreme Lord- He can choose… we ourselves- well, we must sort of accept according to destiny – but Lord Chaitanya, destiny is in His hands. In our life destiny comes. Yes we get some opportunities, we get some opportunities and then we can choose from the opportunities. With Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, He has free choice. He doesn’t have to choose from the opportunities. Our choice is always limited with the opportunities but the Lord has unlimited choice.
So in His unlimited choice He chose Isvara Puri which is very interesting.
We can see that He desired to emphasise the qualities of Isvara Puri - because we understand the Lord performs His pastimes for our sake and He wanted to emphasise this mood of Isvara Puri as the mood that should be remembered.
That mood of just dedicated menial service. That kind of spirit- that is nice.'

Initiation- for our protection

Kadamba Kanana Swami gave a deep insightful lecture in Leipzig with His Holiness Kavicandra Swami. There was also a joyous initiation ceremony and super ecstatic Kirtans.

"Initiation is very important and of great help in our spiritual life. We can see that Srila Prabhupada within our movement very much formalised this process of initiation where formal vows are taken.
Previously it was not like that. Previously they weren’t these questions:
‘What are the four regulative principles and how many rounds do you promise to chant?”
But Prabhupada knew for the modern man, man of this age, unless he promises it out loud in front of the Deities and the vaishnavas and everyone- he thinks:

‘Well I didn’t promise this, I am not obliged’

And therefore the vows of initiation will also stand for our protection. We are making these vows in front of the Deities, front of the spiritual master, in front of Krishna, in front of the vaishnavas - we are bound, we are bound to them.

His Vision is Deeper

We may recall that story of Struta Kirti, who describes that he was in Los Angeles at the airport, and this was the second time that Prabhupada was coming. Coming back from India. We recall Prabhupada had gone to New York: Gone to San Francisco: Had preached and made so many followers: Became ill and went to India.

The second time when Prabhupada came back to Los Angeles, there were hundreds of devotees at the airport. Everyone was just waiting and waiting for Prabhupada to come. There was a huge kirtan and when Prabhupada finally came out of the security area - all the devotees just fell down on the ground and offered their obeisances, and when they got up - they all started crying. Except Struta Kirti – not a tear – nothing. So when he saw all these devotees getting so emotional. He thought, “ My God, I don’t have any devotion”.

So later on the day, he was massaging Prabhupada and during the massage he said, “Prabhupada when you arrived at the airport, all the devotees they were crying. But …I.. you know…I had no tears at all! I have no love at all!”

Prabhupada didn’t reply – he didn’t say a word. The massage continued and that was it. But 24 hours later on the same schedule again there was a massage, and suddenly Prabhupada said, “ This is also love”.

So Prabhupada saw that whatever service that the devotees are doing is out of love. One may say that is because he was so exalted that he was seeing just good qualities in everyone. But it’s not like that. He was seeing even good qualities in everyone that people couldn’t even see in themselves! That is the nature of the pure devotee. His vision is deeper, and therefore he can see within people, qualities that they don’t even see that they have.

One might say, “ I am just a dog!” Alright, but a dog has at least one good quality- that he’s faithful, and that’s favourable for spiritual life. So you maybe a dog, but at least you have one good quality – that you’re faithful. So in other words an exalted vaisnava can see deep good qualities within us and pull them out! He can take these qualities and magnify them – and that’s what Prabhupada did!
