"Catch me first and then I'll let go..."

(A short dramatic performance by HH Kadamba Kanana Swami at the Sunday Feast in Pretoria, South Africa,
20 September 2009...)

So we are afraid, we are very afraid. Sometimes to make the Sunday Feast a little more light, a little more entertaining, I do a little dramatic performance for the audience. And I’ll do it again today, although it’s not completely new maybe to some, but still I’ll do it. This one I will do standing on the vyasasana- I don’t need any partners Gaura, I’ll do it alone (Laughter).

(Maharaja stands on vyasasana- laughter)

So, the roof is leaking. My house is not in a very good condition, what to do! So I decided that I would finally fix it today. So I’m standing here on the roof, right. Even above the trees (Tulasi devi)! It’s quite high up here. There’s lots of water clogged up in the drain (Maharaja’s cup of water), so I better watch out! (Laughter). Anyway, so here on this roof I’m at work. And just as I was at work…(Maharaja raises voice) suddenly my foot slipped and I just went down the roof and I was about to fall and I managed to grab the edge…!!! Oh God! Saved! Oh, wooh! Saved!
Then I try to pull myself up on the edge of the roof…but, you know, because of all the maha prasadam (laughter)…and lack of exercise, it’s not so easy (Maharaja tries to hold on ‘roof’), it’s like I try to get my leg over the edge but unfortunately, I was hanging there and didn’t manage. So then it began to dawn upon me, that how long can I hang here! How long, how long can I hold on to this edge of the roof! So I’m sweating, I’m praying, ‘God, God, oh God, please help me…’

(Maharaja plays double roles: man hanging at edge of roof and God)

From behind a voice, ‘need any help?’
(Man) ‘Who are you?’
(God) ‘I am God!’
(Man) ‘Oh God, please help me, (screams) please help me!’
(God) ‘No problem; just let go off the roof and I will catch you.’
(Man) ‘Uh…can’t you catch me first? And then I’ll let go…’

(Laughter)

Thank you very much.

(Applause)

Yes, so this point ‘can’t you catch me first? Then I will let go’ this is really the mentality. ‘Yes, yes, I’ll surrender. But first You give me everything- all the mercy, all the nectar and then I’ll let go- I promise You…’ No; Krsna’s says, ‘you let go first. First you let go and then I’ll catch you.’ This is dangerous huh? This is our problem that we say, ‘uh well…that’s okay. We’re hanging there, we’re looking how many meters is it? what if He doesn’t catch me? Then it would be a big fall.’ And in this way we are hesitant, always hesitant. But it’s the acaryas, it is the spiritual masters- all the great devotees- that can give us the courage. And we see that they have shown such extraordinary faith, such courage, such determination; where they’d got it? Where they’d got it from? So we’re looking at saintly persons because through saintly persons we ourselves get the courage in determination. Alone we don’t get. Therefore in spiritual life alone, one doesn’t come very far. One must, Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah (Cc. Madhya 17.186), one must follow in the footsteps of the Mahajanas. That is the way, that is the process...

Trying To Exploit the Material Energy

So we think that we are in control, but in actuality the modes of material nature are interacting and we are simply under the control of the nature thinking that we are in control of our choices. But what choices do we make. We make the choices that are dictated to us. The soul is not effected. The soul is somehow or other in this world but not really mixing truly with the nature of this world because the soul is of a different nature. The living being is not of the same nature as the universal energy. It is said that the material energy is made up of eight separated energies, eight energies that are originating from Krishna. But superior to these eight energies is the energy of a different nature, that energy is unlike the material energy... The living being is eternal. But when the eternal living being comes under the influence of the material energy then he is trying to exploit that material energy.

HH Jayadvaita Swami's visit to Stockholm

Hare Krishna,

HH Jayadvaita Swami was visiting Stockholm recently.
You can download lectures if you click here, than go to mp3 archive/ Jayadvaita Swami, there you will find 3 new Srimad Bhagavatam lectures and one Bhagavad Gita lecture.

Lord Jagannatha and Lord Chaitanya

Lord Jagannatha, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, we are worshipping Him by the manrta:
"Jagannatha Swami Nayana Patha Gami Bhavatu Me"
Which basically is a prayer to the Lord of the Universe and requesting Him to be visible to us. My Dear Lord of the Universe be visible unto me. So this indeed is the problem: for the conditioned soul the Supreme Personality of Godhead remains invisible. This is the biggest complication in the world. This has caused all the confusion, all the religious wars, it has caused all the doubt in all the individuals and it is also effecting us.
When Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu saw Lord Jagannatha, what to speak of seeing Lord Jagannatha, when Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was on the way to Jagannatha puri, and when he saw the chakra, the wheel on top of the temple of Lord Jagannatha, He crashed to the ground in ecstasy. And from that point on it took so long to cover that distance from the temple because he had so many ecstatic symptoms on the way, it was inconceivable! And it is a well known fact that when Lord Chaitanya saw Lord Jagannatha first time in the temple He wanted to jump up on the altar and embrace the deities and then he fell unconscious to the ground. So the pastimes and exchanges between Lord Jagannatha and Lord Chaitanya are very important. It is no coincidence that Srila Prabhupada bought Jagannatha Ratha Yatra to the western world. The relationship between Lord Jagannatha and Lord Chaitanya is a very intimate relationship which exists eternally. Within that exchange it is not only that Lord Chaitanya is expressing His devotion for Lord Jagannatha but it is also a fact that Lord Jagannatha is expressing His devotion for Lord Chaitanya.

The End Result Is Good

Krishna the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He knows past, present and future and He knows everything and therefore the justice of The Supreme Personality of Godhead is perfect. We must have the faith that whatever happens Krishna is all good. If we accept Krishna as all good, then we can never say that anything is bad because we accept that Krishna is behind it all. So Krishna is all good and whatever is coming that is sent by Krishna is also good. It is good for some purpose, in the long run, but meanwhile in the immediate it may go sometimes quite bad, that can be, but the end result is good. The devotee has that faith, that firm faith in Krishna and therefore the devotee never becomes discouraged by any difficulties in life.

Nityananda Rama!

The Lotus Feet of Lord Nityananda are essential.... ..without the Lotus Feet of Lord Nityananda one can not ever get the mercy of Radhe and Krishna, in another words be an eligible candidate to go back to the spiritual world. We need that mercy of Lord Nityananda.

Krsna- the best!

Krsna means the all-attractive- that's the best! Because, it doesn't just speak about Him but it also speaks about His devotee, it speaks about the relationship. 'Krsna'- the name speaks something about the Supreme Lord and it speaks something about the relationship of the Supreme Lord. Therefore there are many names that God has, but His best name is Krsna, without a doubt! And therefore we chant (sings) 'Hare Krsna Hare Krsna (Gauranga!) Krsna Krsna Hare Hare (Nityananda!) Hare Rama Hare Rama (Prabhupada!) Rama Rama Hare Hare (he he he!)...

Suffering!

NO ONE IS FREE FROM SUFFERING
We must indeed develop this spirit of compassion. Compassion in sense is natural because we ourselves are experiencing suffering in this world and we know the pain of suffering. So if we see that someone else is going through what we are going through then naturally there is compassion. So first one has to know what suffering is, at least to some extent. If one has suffered one becomes more compassionate because one begins to realize that this is too much, this suffering , I mean, no one should be going through this......There are no exceptions in this world: no one is free from suffering.

LORD BUDDHA'S SEES SUFFERING
It reminds me of the story of the Buddha who was a prince in a Vedic royal family and it is said that His father at an early age had heard a prophecy that his son was very spiritually inclined and might just take to spiritual life, therefore His father made all the arrangements to only have enjoyments in His life and so there was no suffering.
Suffering was not entering the palace , it wasn’t there. There were no old people , there were no diseased people , everyone was just beautiful and everyone was just enjoying. But when the prince was grown up one day He just independently went out and He actually saw so many old people, He had never seen this before: What is wrong with these people, what‘s happened? What’s happened that they look like this ? Oh you don’t know, they are old, everyone will become like this. Everyone? Yes. I have never seen such a person. So yes, everyone must become old like this even you. So He realized that this material world is a place full of suffering and His focus had became to be free from suffering.....

DEVOTIONAL SERVICE CAN DESTROY SUFFERING
A vaishnava automatically becomes free from suffering by developing an ecstatic relationship with Krishna. That ecstatic relationship with Krishna removes all suffering. Therefore it is said that devotional service destroys all suffering. We are automatically overcoming suffering, that is the nature of devotional service, although it may take some time.

Give The Mercy To Others

Vasudeva Datta was ready to shortcut all the sin of all the living beings in the universe had to face, he was ready to somehow or other take these reactions upon himself. So this is the mood of a sankirtana devotee. A sankirtana devotee must be ready to accept suffering himself for the benefit of others. The sankirtana devotee must be ready to undergo so much austerity for the sake of delivering others. This is what our movement is propagating, and if we do so then we become advanced. Therefore our main focus is to be merciful. If we are merciful, if somehow or other we preoccupy ourselves giving the mercy to others and if we make that our whole focus in life then everything else will follow from that, because Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, He becomes purchased by this spirit.

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 30/01/2005)

Just Ask Krishna!

For the devotee who really tries to sincerely chant....and to keep his eyes of that television of the mind, one day when he looks on that television Krishna will be there! One day he will see Krishna. This chanting is the actual means in which one can see Krishna. It will be possible to see Him face to face as we are seeing each other now.
Srila Prabhuapada was such a devotee. Once a journalist came to interview Prabhupada and he heard that a pure devotee is always acting according to Krishna’s will. So the journalist asked, “Well, how does he know Krishna’s will?” “How does he know?”
So one Sanyassi there, senior devotee, he volunteered, “The pure devotee knows because Krishna reveals Himself from within the heart.”
Prabhupada said “ No no no, not like that. If I want to know what Krishna wants, I just ask Him!” Simple! That was Prabhupada. He could just ask Krishna.

What A Relief!!!

Yes it is not easy....from day one practically, from the beginning of this movement devotees have been struggling. There is a nice story, it is a description of once Prabhupada’s senior disciples of the early days sometimes found a little difficult and one of them became a big shot and a big leader and at one point he was in charge for east India. He was running sankirtana parties and he was a preacher there.... as time had it, as fate had it, it got a little too much for him and at one point he was deviating alittle bit from the regulative principles and he smoked a certain ..... substance. Yeah and for a little while he got into smoking that substance. The local temple leaders got very upset and they rang up Prabhupada, they didn’t get prabhupada on the line but got the secretary. So they told the secretary that he is smoking that substance. That was then told to Prabhupada, few devotees were there, Tamal Krishna Maharaja who was travelling with Prabhupada, at that time was there... And when Prabhupada heard the secretary he sent a message back and said: “Tell him that if he doesn’t stop then I will reject him!”
Whoever was there was shocked that Prabhupada could say such a thing, such a heavy thing , “Reject him!”..... Reject the disciple. So Tamala Krishna Maharaja was also quite shocked when he heard this and he asked Prabhupada: “Prabhupada, would you really do that? Would you really reject him?”
Prabhupada said: “ Ofcourse not. I am just saying that. Lord Nityananda is so merciful, He never rejects anybody.”
So this is very important; What a relief that Lord Nityananda is there. I mean, to deal with all our clouds and all our rain showers, all the dark moments that slip between the cups and the lips, all the difficulties that we face ....there is Lord Nityananda. He smiles upon us , it is because of the smile of Lord Nityananda that we feel inspiration in Krishna Consciousness.

SMILE OF LORD NITYANANDA
We think that it is us (Maharaja impersonates an arrogant proud man): “Well I’m getting a higher taste now, I am a little Krishna consciousness, I am getting a bit more advanced you know, I felt inspiration”
Yes we did, but because Lord Nityananda is smiling upon us, that is the smile of Lord Nityananda.............. Lord Nityananda is glancing upon us. Why is he doing so? He is the servant of Lord Chaitanya. Lord Chaitanya has ordered Him, He has ordered Him. So Lord Nityananda being the perfect servant of Lord Chaitanya is carrying this order on His head like a jewel.

Are you preoccupied with Krishna or many other Things?!

BRANCHES, SUB BRANCHES, COMPLICATIONS
Pure devotional service is a wonderful activity because it is at that stage that one is no longer divided ....In this material world we are (Sanskrit), That we become branched out in so many different things...this interest, that interest....more and more things, everything creates more and more complications, like a branch many sub branches come from it. Just like someone who was single and then he becomes married and then children come and in the end he can not imagine how he could survive if he was single, on such little money how was it possible, how could I do it, how could I live like that....now we need so much. This is an example of how one in material life, how one’s activities are branching out, everywhere in all directions. But devotional service, one becomes fixed, fixed upon Krishna and everything serves the purpose of Krishna. Everything means that....only satisfaction of Krishna. That means that we have to give up all attachments.

BODILY CONSCIOUSNESS
Designations, the identifications..... one can have identifications, one can say I am from Mumbai, I am from Mahastra or something like that, from India...... Identification, why are we from Mumbai or from Mahastra or India. We are not, We are not. Our body may be from there but we are not that body, so what have we got to do with that designation?! Nothing, absolutely nothing! And in so many ways all the designations belong to the body, that is the point. So as one is realizing truly, that he is not the body, that means also, the designations disappear.
Sometimes we see a devotee walking around with a t-shirt: you are not this body, you are an eternal spirit soul........ those are nice t-shirts, but yet a t-shirt is not enough, one has to take the consequences of this t-shirt (Sankrit) Every designations that are related to the body are not important, very secondary, it doesn’t have much meaning. If we are not the body then what is the importance of the body.... Ok we have it, Ok we use it, that’s about it. We have so many things, we use them but how important are they? But somehow or other we become absorbed, absorbed in bodily consciousness. Bodily consciousness is described as: I and Mine...not only I but also mine: My Possessions.

MIND INTO OBJECTS, OBJECTS INTO MIND
In the eleventh canto of Srimad Bhagavatam there is a description where the sages have assembled and they are asking questions to Lord Brahma: So the question that they are asking is the following question: "This world is full of so many objects, why is it that the mind goes into the objects and that the objects go into the mind?"
That is a big question. Lord Brahma had difficulty answering the question. Lord Brahma said “I am subject to the same thing, it happens to me as well.” So the question was then answered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

PREOCCUPIED WITH SO MANY THINGS
This is the nature of the material energy, the nature of the mind is to enter into the things and then the things enter into the mind. I sometimes give an example of this point: If you take some money and you lock it in a box, you are not only locking the money in the box, you are also locking a portion of your mind in the box each time. You may have so many keys and witheach lock, part of your mind is locked also, so many things, you can think of what you have locked, you locked your house, you locked your bike, you locked your car, you locked your money away.....with each thing a bit of the mind is there. In this way our mind becomes preoccupied with so many things, but a devotee is only preoccupied with Krishna and then can take the material energy and use it in the service of Krishna.

A new birth...

On Saturday, 19 September 2009, HH Kadamba Kanana Swami gave initiation to 3 African devotees in Pretoria, South Africa. Below are some small highlights:

"On a day of initiation, we are taking serious actions upon this understanding... It is the time when we appear before Krsna, it is a time when we say, ‘Krsna, after so many lifetimes, finally I have understood. On this very day I’m offering myself as Your servant. From this day on, I make this promise that I am Yours.” That’s a big promise. It’s not a small thing. And that promise, it will always stay; no matter where we go that promise will not go away..."

Bhakta April becomes Prema Vikasa das
"We have everything; everything is given to us. It doesn't depend on our own strength. No one is born strong...everyone is born with weak senses. But there is a process, which was given by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu; not only are They showering us with blessings but They are also giving us a system that we follow..."

Bhakta 'Mahajana' becomes Visnujana das
"So, it is an auspicious time; it is the time that the path back to the spiritual world is now straight, it is open. And on this day it is open, there’s nothing blocking the way now. Our previous bad karma- whatever it was- it’s no longer an obstacle. In this ceremony some of that karma, some of the karma that is stored within our heart- will be removed. With the grains that are thrown in the fire, the sinful karmic reactions will burn up. Actually with the very moment that the spiritual master formally accepts the disciple, at that very moment the initiation is complete..."

...and Manukanya devi dasi received 2nd initiation

"So the main quality for second initiation is to be responsible; it is that quality which makes a difference. Generally, responsible means to be Krsna's representative, responsible means to be Krsna's servant. It means to be serious about what Krsna wants..."

"It takes many lifetimes- sometimes up in the universe, sometimes in the lower regions of the universe, sometimes on this planet, sometimes in one country, sometimes in another country...how many times have we taken birth? But it is by the mercy of pure devotees that Krsna’s mercy reaches us..."

You can become a flying chicken!

It is said that the platform of realization is like the sky and different birds fly on different levels. Some just know a little bit- I'm not the body. Others fly higher- they know it in a higher way. Others are still flying higher and still knowing it higher. Different birds fly on different levels in the sky of self realization. And in this way, we, who can barely fly, we are like chickens- chickens are birds but they don't fly. A little bit- flap, flap and they come back down. But by the mercy of Mahapraabhu, even chickens can fly! You can become a flying chicken..!

He Is always My Worshipful Lord Unconditionally

In our present state of existence our emotional level has come down to state of dullness. This is material life. We are very limited in our emotional expression actually and if we compare that with the emotional expression of Srimati Radharanai is displaying, it is really such intensity of attachment that is unknown to us. We are attached but when there is trouble involved with our attachment our attachment decreases very rapidly and when there is a trouble after a while then our attachment turns in being very detached and we give this up ..this problem, even if it was at one stage our beloved, we are ready to give up that beloved who has now became a pain, trouble. We are contemplating seriously someway or other breaking the relationship. But it says that real love is present even when in a relationship everything is unfavourable, it still is never given up.....

Maharaja quotes from Sikshastakam: “I know no one but Krsna as my Lord, and He shall remain so even if He handles me roughly in His embrace or makes me brokenhearted by not being present before me. He is completely free to do anything and everything, for He is always my worshipful Lord unconditionally.”

We Are Placed Somewhere According To Our Behaviour

BATTLES GOING ON IN THE UNIVERSE
Some years ago we were in the Amsterdam temple and suddenly someone put thirty thousand dollars into our account and there was a little message: “From the Cosmic warrior”.
Well, you know, if someone put thirty thousand dollars into your account you sort of go for a visit with a box of prasadam.. ...and so i went. And when I went to the door of the place, a man came in and he looked around and he said “Are you alone?”
I said “Yes”.
“Quick come in”
So I quickly came in closed the door, then he took me inside the room ...and the room it had many televisions, all stacked up on each other, like from the floor to the ceiling, whole wall of TVs and he said “Look.” So i looked and he said “Do you see them?”
He wanted to hear yes, since he just gave thirty thousand I said “Errr yesss i see them”
He said “Yes there are many”
“Hmmm quite a few yes”
And he said “Yes many UFOS.”
He said “They are regularly here, there is a lot of activity here, especially in the late evening hours.”
And he showed a few little black spots on the screen, which could well be dust on the lens or something like that on the camera!
Any way the man had cameras in all directions on his house watching UFOS and he was convinced there was a great battle, great battle going on in the universe....
And at least that was one thing he had right ...although the rest looked like a product of his mind!
He did though understand that there is a battle going on in the universe.

HEAVENLY PLANETS ARE NOT ALWAYS SO HEAVENLY
It is true that it is not just wonderful on the heavenly planets. You do so much puja to go to Swarga (Heavan), it is a big thing to go to Swarga. In many places the cremation place in India is known as Swarga Dwar (The Gate to Heaven) So the idea is from there you go to the heavenly planet, to Swarga...people want to go to Swarga. Out of the fourteen planetary systems Swarga is in the upper regions, and there it is wonderful. There are beautiful gardens, beautiful and even more beautiful ladies and the demigods also are very handsome and powerful. So it is a place ready for enjoyment, wonderful. There is only one little difficulty, that there are demons! And they try to attack again and again. And the war between the demigods and the demons in the universe is going on. Sometimes it’s happening and sometimes it’s not happening, sometimes there is just the impending threat of war. Thus it is not just so heavenly , there are some complications. For the ones who want to go to Swarga , we wish them well! We ourselves will give it a miss mate! We let it pass.
We see here that the demigods are taking shelter of Krishna for protection , they are taking shelter of Lord Vishnu who comes and protects them from the demons. It is a fact that there is an order in the universe, there is a plan in the universe, one gets assigned a paticular place according to his behaviour within the universe. The demoniac personalities, they somehow or other left their assigned place and went to the upper regions and captured those upper regions. It was particularly possible because in the upper regions some offences had been made. However the Supreme Lord appeared to restore the original order in the universe.

WE CAN BE PUT INTO LOWER REGIONS
So this is what basically happens, often to us. We are placed somewhere according to our behaviour, thus an intelligent person is careful, because an intelligent person understands: “ I must beware, if I misbehave I will have to pay for it, I will be degraded, I will be put down into lower regions .. that’s the result”
In other words you’ll go to hell! ...to say it more contemporary words! What to do, that is the nature of life. Sometimes people don’t believe it. It was ten o clock at night and the telephone was ringing.......I picked up the phone this time and at late night there is this lady “It’s not true, It’s not true!”
I said just “Calm down, calm down it’s not so bad.”
She said “No No it’s not true I read it, I met this very nice person on the street and I bought this book and then I read it and this book basically says that all my family members are going to hell!”
I said like “Well I mean does it really say you’re family members” (Crowd laughs)
“Well it says that anybody who drinks and eats meat is going to hell”
I said “Well that is true” (Crowd Laughs)
“But, But it is not true , it can not be true, that all my family is going to hell”...
“Calm down Calm down.”
She was really upset by it. It is shocking, it is shocking that this is possible that our dear most ones are on their way to hell.

"I DON'T BELIEVE IN HELL"
So what are we going to do about it. So therefore lot of people have decided: “ I just don’t believe in hell, I don’t believe in it. I think this is just some medieval ..evil, some evil invention from the priest to get more money out of the people: “You sinners if u don’t repent today you will burn. Burn, burn , burn , burn in hell There is only one option ...yes you give something today!...donation giving now..or else burn burn burn ""

Therefore lot of people think that hell is just some imaginary thing
So yes it is true that there is a hell and there is many kinds of varieties , Yes!

Goodness, Passion, Ignorance

"We tend to experience the world which is governed by the three modes of material nature as reality because we have been covered over by the three modes of nature since time immemorial, therefore we are responding to them in so many situations and are always calculating our advantages and disadvantages and we are trying to fulfil so many desires which are born from this interaction of the material nature"
(Kadamba Kanana Swami)

"We go through the process with patience and determination, we become purified. And then, yes, gradually the lower modes of material nature disappears. Tada raja tamo bhava kama…so the influence of tama-guna and raja-guna disappear and we become fixed in the mode of goodness"
(Kadamba Kanana Swami)

"Krishna is personally taking an interest in every living being therefore He appears as Paramatma, and He’s personally trying to pull every living being out of the modes of material nature"

The Not So Great Material World (VID!)

"Truth of the matter is the material world is not designed for happiness and there is nothing that can fix it....NOTHING! It is like a broken car, it can not be fixed. Fix a broken car...forget it! It’s not even worth starting, as soon as you fix one thing, another thing is automatically broken. So the material world is like that, it cannot be fixed!"

Do We All Get The Same Revelations?

Devotee: What also did help me was the book "The Art of Chanting". If I did understand correctly the names will bring realizations ,very individually. While I was always thinking that would we all get the same revelations?

Kadamba Kanana Swami:
The Holy Name is non different from Krsna. Everyone is having his own unique relationship in service with Krsna. There are five principle relationship with Krsna, namely madhurya(conjugal), vatsalya(parental),sakhya (friendship), dasya(servitorship), santa (neutrality), we have any of these five relationship in common with many others. But within these five rasas every individual has his own unique relationship with Krsna. Some gopis wave the camara, other gopis make tambula and again other gopis are messengers. In this way some realizations we all have in common, realizing that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and that we are His eternal servant,. but then everyone serves Krsna in his own unique way.

Kadamba Kanana Swami in SA- Sep 2009!

HH Kadamba Kanana Swami arrived last Wednesday back in South Africa! Maharaja’s mood and desire has always been to uplift the African preaching and to take it on another level. He, in fact, also many times said that, “my heart is ‘black’! I think I was an African in my previous life…!” Maharaja headed up the historical project in 2007, where for the very first time Soweto was touched by the mercy of Lord Jagannatha! (Read here for more). Once again this year, he is currently very, very busy in assisting with the preparations for the upcoming 2nd Soweto Ratha Yatra that is soon to take place on September 26th!

“…it’s very nice because the first time (in 2007), Soweto Ratha Yatra was my project but actually this time it is the project of the Soweto devotees…I’m just helping a little bit and I think that that’s very nice that South Africa has one more Ratha Yatra to stay! So it’s going to be an annual event and I think that is what Srila Prabhupada really wanted to see…”

So in this way we see that four regulative principles are only the preliminaries. We must be there and then we start chanting Hare Krishna .........hmmm now it gets more difficult. And then when it is not only about sixteen rounds, when it is about quality, about the quality of our chanting then it becomes more difficult. When it is about attentive chanting then it becomes quite difficult. It seems that that mantra is more slippery than a bar of soap! Yes sometimes that soap under that shower you try to catch it , this mantra is so hard...the mind just goes anywhere and everywhere! We seem to have unlimited capacity to go all over the universe and to fix our mind on anything except the Mahamantra...it is just amazing! We can easily concentrate on all other things for hours but when it comes to chanting Hare Krishna...so hard to fix the mind.
Of course with time automatically....with time in devotional service our relationship with the Holy Name changes.

Animal Platform To Human Platform And Now Service!

Actually the four regulative principles, Srila Prabhupada explained is where human life begins. Anyone who doesn’t follow the four regulative principles is an animal...sorry to say it ...I mean there may be some in the room (crowd laughter) some such animals may be here. Anyway it is possible to come to the human form of life very quickly by accepting the four regulative principles...but as long as we are not; we are simply an animal...we are on the animal platform.
So it is nothing spiritually exalted, four regulative principles, it is just where human life begins, it is not even an expression of bhakti: no meat fish or eggs no intoxication, no gambling, no illicit sex doesn’t mean we have reached the platform of devotional service yet. It just means that we have stopped being an animal, that’s all! It just means we have just become human but we didn’t do anything for Krishna yet! Then from that platform , that human platform we have to begin to do some service, roll up our sleeves and let’s get into it...let’s do something now. In chanting Hare Krishna, yes we begin devotional service.

Be Ready to make Sacrifice for Krishna

For Krishna, we renounce so many things. Yes first it is clear: no meat fish or eggs, no gambling, no intoxication, no illicit sex...that is easy because that is very clear. It is yes or no. Am I following three principles or four, it is clear, that’s clear. Am I chanting sixteen rounds or ten or twelve or eleven or what, it is clear, it is measurable. But once that initial part of devotional service is there and once we are following those standards then comes the difficult part. Because then we have to develop the qualities of a pure devotee, then we have to be ready to make sacrifice for Krishna.

Renunciation Alone?....NO

Renunciation alone, what benefit will it give us? Simply by fasting will we get the mercy of Krishna? Simply by giving up the world? No.

By embracing devotional service to Krishna, that is how we will get the mercy of Krishna. But when in the course of that service there is so much to renounce. Within the course of devotional service to Krishna we have to give up so many things but not seperate renunciation. It is not that he who eats less than everyone else, he who sleeps less than anyone else will he please Krishna the most? No.

The devotee who is “Preaching my glories” Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita “ He is most dear to me” YES!
Glorifying Krishna that remains the activity that attains the most mercy of Krishna.

Chanting Hare Krishna Gives Us Life!

So this cleansing of the heart has to be done through chanting Hare Krishna, that is our immediate connection to Krishna and it gives us life, it is the life of all transcendental knowledge, without the chanting there is no life!

Avoid The Ten Offences

It is not the material desires, it is the offences against the holy name that is the problem .....because the process of chanting Hare Krishna will easily remove the material desires but if we commit offences against the holy name then the effect of the process is delayed and thus will take longer for the material desires to be removed. And if the offences are of a serious nature then even new anarthas will be established in the heart and thus new material desires. So the essence is to avoid the offences, avoid the ten offences of the Holy Name.

Radharani Is The Personification Of Devotional Service

Krishna is maintaining unlimited relationships with unlimited devotees and with all these unlimited devotees Krishna is having a variation of relationships and all are dear to Him. It is not that any living being is not dear to Krishna. Krishna is described as a friend to all living beings. So Krishna maintains relationships with all devotees and everyone is dear to Him .... but Srimati Radharani is the most dear of all. She is the personification of the (Sanskrit)..shakti, the pleasure potency and this pleasure potency is actually relating to devotional service. Devotional service is the pleasure potency .....and Srimatri Radharani is the ultimate personification of devotional service and therefore She is the most Dear Most Devotee of all.

God attracts everyone, He is not Boring!

We can find out more about who Prabhupada was and the more we find out the more we understand what this movement is and the more we understand that "Yes God indeed exists" and by the way His name is Krishna..... and He lives in Vrndavana and He plays a flute. And why wouldn’t He....it is fun to play a flute especially if it attracts others and the flute of Krishna attracts the mind of everyone . So yes not a boring God.....a boring God that sits and punishes.

Bhagavad Gita

Still completely relevant today because the Bhagavad Gita is eternal and therefore it always applies, it applies to us, it will apply to people in the future, it applied to people in the past therefore everyone can find himself in the Bhagavad Gita. So therefore the Bhagavad Gita holds to us a mirror, it makes us look at our own situation and how we can take it to another level.

Please Krsna

Vasudeva is the Ultimate goal of life, He is the Ultimate Dharma, He is the Ultimate austerity, He is the Ultimate goal of all yoga, He is the Ultimate goal of all sacrifice...that has to be understood, that purpose of all sacrifices is to please the Supreme Personality of Godhead, that is the perfection. There is no other greater perfection in life, there is nothing more pleasing than to Please the Lord.
