(HH Kadamba Kanana Swami, Radhadesh, Belguim, 2nd June 2012) Lecture: SB 5.13.6

The thought comes up:

'The senses may enjoy.'

Therefore we must make sure that nothing, nothing we are in contact with is enjoyable. Therefore we have designed the Vyasa-saan by making the cushion too soft, and the backrest too short! And of course we have microphone stands to kind of give the speaker back pains because they always move down during the talk! All designs are there to make sure that there are no sense enjoyment because imagine that whilst speaking the Bhagavatam that I might actually get comfortable on this seat. Just in case I might decide to lean back too much so to make sure that the Bhagavatam table is high enough to act as a wall, so no one can watch the Swami in such a degraded condition!

So it's difficult, It's difficult not to enjoy the senses, right? It's hard because they seem to do it on their own. Seriously they just seem to do it, even when not solicited for and when nothing's been offered to them. You know, just, 'Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare.' (Completely serious about going back to Godhead), I stepped out and the sun was shining and my skin was in ecstasy! 'Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna', this maya is too much! 'HARE KRISHNA, HARE KRISHNA.'

I see the beautiful greenery in the Radhadesh garden, and it looks so lovely! 'MAYA, MAYA! Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama.' As I came downstairs, then a devotee comes and says:

'Hari Bol Prabhu! They gave me a whole bag of barfis.'

And what am I going to do with them?

'Well of course, you're going to distribute them. Aren't you Swami?'

I mean, really. Yes, yes we must distribute them. Okay, then can I have one?

'Well not so much for a Sanyasi is a whole one'

Okay maybe a crumb? Anyway, what to do? The senses are designed to enjoy, they do it, as my mother used to say:

'You get used to everything and after a while you start to enjoy it. Hanging and strangling.'

Anything, people will enjoy anything after a while. That's how it is. If someone can't have a barfi for medical reasons and after a while they start to enjoy it…To enjoy is natural, it is not forbidden. Therefore spiritual life is not meant to be a life where we deny, that natural enjoyment to come. We can have it, that's Krishna's grace! Krishna has not denied us that enjoyment in our aim for spiritual life!
